_Monty Python's The Meaning of Life_ has a skit about the universe. It's very informative.

Nova has a 3 part one called "The Elegant Universe" with Brian Greene, it's more string theory, definitely worth the watch. Based on the book by the same title.
"What the Bleep Do We Know" is also excellent, I'd actually watch this one while tripping if I were you.
I'm sure there's more that I've seen, just can't remember them right now

What the Bleep Do We Know is garbage pseudo-nonsense wrapped up as speculative philosophy derived from quantum physics.

It's probably as informative as the Monty Python film I suggested .
I bet the Planet Earth DVDs would be cool.
I've never really found too many interesting cosmology oriented films.

That was a steaming pile. Seemed to me like a school project that was over-indulged with Hollywood money. Cornball. Pathetic.

not so much about the universe as a hole
but 2001 a space odyssey is pretty good while tripping

I've been really into this stuff lately, I can also confirm that "The Elegent Universe" is a really good series. I also am really liking the tv show "The Universe", its on the history channel but i just downloaded all 30+ 44min episodes and have been powering through them. Every night I just consult this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Episode_list_of_The_Universe_(TV_series) and see what i'm interested in. This show in particular has some amazing visual effects.
Other good series are: Carl Sagans Cosmos BBC Space(6 episodes, hosted by sam neil) Planet Earth(prefer original attenborough narrated version) Earth: The Biography
I have heard BBC Horizon, Origins(Nova) are both good and those are on my to watch list. Also pretty much anything by BBC, National Geographic and Nova should be pretty good.
Also I would not reccomend "What the bleep do we know", its total junk. I got fooled by it the first time i watched it, but after i did some investigating i found out that crazy looking chick thats on there is the leader of this organization that is pretty much a cult, in fact i think its called "The cult of ramtha". Or just browsing now i see its now called "The ramtha school of enlightenment"
Quote:
Ramtha is the entity that Knight says she channels. According to her, Ramtha was a Lemurian warrior who fought the Atlanteans over 35,000 years ago.[2] She says that Ramtha led an army of over 2.5 million across the continents, conquering two thirds of the known world, which was going through cataclysmic geological changes. According to Knight, Ramtha led the army for ten years until he was betrayed and almost killed.
Knight says that Ramtha spent the next seven years in isolation recovering and observing nature, among other things. He later mastered many skills, including foresight and out-of-body experiences, until he led his army to the Indus River while in his late seventies. Ramtha taught them everything he knew for 120 days, until he ascended before them. He made a promise to his army that he would come back to teach them again, and so he appeared to JZ Knight in 1977 to re-educate the "forgotten gods", those who had forgotten themselves and their divinity.
At any rate, they splice in scenes with their only credible physicists and follow it with there own beliefs to make it seem credible.

I have seen both Nova's elegant universe and what the bleep do we know.
I actually have seen what the bleep do we know on shrooms and it was a fantastic trip starter, we couldn't stop thinking about the crazyness of existence.
I suppose Waking Life would be a trip as well.

Others have already mentioned it, but Planet Earth in HD is amazing, as is The Universe series from the History Channel.

I found that movie very wishy washy too.
Just watch a couple episodes of the cosmo's series. If you have the time you can download the whole series except it will take forever. Just remember to set the priority of one episode high so it will download one episode at a time so you don't have to wait a week for them all to be done at once (the total file size for the cosmos series on www.isohunt.com is 9 gigs! )
