FC Question....

afoaf came from only used to using a terranuim made from a clear plastic box where i fruited pf cakes and sprayed and used perlite to reach the correct rh levels, i also did the opening of the box at times during the day for fae.
afoaf now has a 4 tier GH with slits cut on the side and a coolmist on a timer for every 3 hours it comes on for an hour.
He has not seen pins yet and it has been 7 days on a uncased, spawn to coir batch. The question is.......when do you know how to regulate when the coolmist should be on and off? i see that everyone has different suggestions.
What is the purpose behind it? This way i can understand the schedule needed.

A hygrometer is an absolute must to avoid guessing. Get a calibrateable analogue one, with the lil dial on it. I've yet to find a reliable digital one for a good price.

Or if you want to go all out you could get a psychrometer. Here are some posts from hyphae about them:

You should never run a humidifier in a terrarium. Humidifiers are for mini-greenhouses. For a terrarium use perlite humidification. Here's the shotgun terrarium tek. I'd suggest using that, and purchase a hygrometer to monitor humidity. RR

I know there are no standard defintions when we talk of terrariums, FC's, and mini-greenhouses... But where is the threshold where you prefer to switch from perlite trays to humidifiers? Would you call a 10 square foot chamber a large terrarium or a FC or a mini-greenhouse? How about a 20 square foot chamber?
Kinda on the subject, I'd like to throw out this question/comment: If a cool mist is put inside of a chamber, it provides humidity and air movement, but since it is reusing chamber air, there is no fresh air introduced. (Although I realize venting can help.) Some folks pipe the coolmist into the FC (ie ShroomGod's method) but there are often back pressure problems with hooking up pipes to cool mists. How about this idea for FAE and humidity: Put the cool mist inside the chamber, and attach a hose to cool mist air INLET (where the filter is) with the other end of the hose going to the outside air. So when the cool mist comes on, it pulls in and humidifies outside (fresh) air.
Has anyone tried this idea? It seems like it would be better to humidify fresh air than stale chamber air...

Theres no standard setting, yuou have to fine tune it yourself by trial and error.
95%-99% is ideal.
If everything starts getting wet, its too much.
