Half-Hour Obama Infomercial to Air on 7 Networks tonight
    #9154112 - 10/29/08 12:57 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Flush with cash, Democratic candidate to saturate prime-time television tonight with multimillion-dollar ad buy

Barack Obama plans to air a 30-minute commercial Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on three major networks, as well as smaller outlets.

Coming just six days before Election Day, the purchase is one of the largest ad buys in election history. It will saturate the airwaves, even delaying the continuation of the fifth game of the rain-delayed World Series.

The Obama team bought time on CBS, NBC and FOX for about $1 million per network. The infomercial will also run on Univision, BET, MSNBC and TV One.

Flush with cash after record-shattering fundraising gained in part by reversing his vow to accept public financing, Obama has a huge financial edge in the last week of the campaign, having raised more than $600 million, including $150 million in September alone. Republican rival John McCain's campaign is relying on federal funding of about $84 million for the entire period between the Sept. 1-4 Republican convention and Election Day, Nov. 4.

In the ad blitz, the Democratic presidential candidate will focus in part on real voters' stories. Other political figures will make an appearance and the ad buy will dip into a live rally from Sunrise, Fla.

According to Advertising Age, Obama is on track to spend more on TV ads in the last 25 days of the race than McCain's entire campaign.

Speaking to several hundred supporters in Miami Wednesday, McCain took a shot at Obama's prime-time address, saying that "I will never delay the start of the World Series for an infomercial."

In response to the massive coverage, McCain's campaign released a new ad that says Obama is not ready for prime time in the White House.

The ad, called "TV Special," says Americans are unlikely to hear from Obama that his proposals to increase spending and increase taxes will hurt the economy.

"With crises at home and abroad, Barack Obama lacks the experience America needs," the ad's narrator says. "And it shows. His response to our economic crisis is to spend and tax our economy deeper into recession. The fact is Barack Obama's not ready yet."

The TV campaign comes as Obama, ahead in national and swing-state polls over McCain, tries to win over teetering voters right from the comfort of their couches.

Obama is also giving an interview to a prominent network news anchor, and appearing with fellow Democratic star Bill Clinton at a rally that is timed to hit the late-evening news.

Obama is campaigning Wednesday in North Carolina and Florida.

During a stop in Raleigh, N.C., he will be interviewed by Charlie Gibson of ABC's "World News."

Later, in Florida, Obama will tape an appearance on Comedy Central's irreverent "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart. The segment will run at 11 p.m. EDT.

Obama may even be competing with himself.

During the same 11 p.m. slot, Obama is scheduled to appear at a campaign rally for the first time with Bill Clinton, whose wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, lost to Obama in the primaries.

On Thursday, Obama is giving interviews to Brian Williams, anchor of NBC's "Nightly News," and to Rachel Maddow, the host of an evening show on MSNBC.

Two viewers who don't seem excited about all the exposure are Obama's two young daughters.

Appearing on Jay Leno's talk show Monday, Obama's wife, Michelle, said 10-year-old daughter Malia got a little worried to hear that her dad's infomercial would blanket TV.

"'You're going to be on all the TV? Are you going to interrupt my TV?"' her mother said Malia asked.

Michelle Obama said the presidential candidate assured his daughter that he hadn't bought time on the Disney Channel.

Obama's campaign is reportedly being charged the "lowest unit cost" required under federal law for the massive ad buys Wednesday.

Will this help Obama or Hurt him?

IMO its overkill.

and what the hell is he going to talk about for 30 minutes?

I'll be watching it.

By the way, Ross Perot did the exact same thing.  Just thought I'd mention it.

My prediction is that he'll go for the ultra-positive message.

Heck, I like Obama as much as anyone here but I'm kind of mad they're pre-empting the World Series for this thing.

That is slightly excessive.

Pris?  Biased?  I don't really see it.  A bit cynical perhaps, but biased and full of hatred?  If you are looking for hatred, look at those that can't mention Palin without a colorful vulgarity to help it along.

Is it just me or is the National mood currently as of this moment as tense as it has ever been and getting steadily tenser?

Well he's only delaying the pre-game show, or canceling it, not sure. Anyway, the rain made more of a delay then Obama will

No, it was mostly reiteration of the same with high production value. My mom cried a little which I thought was sweet. And he just piled on the endorsements. All in all, clutch move. Of course we didn't see anything similar from McCain.
