Late Fall

I went out the other day in search of Flammulina velutipes, which I've always wanted to find. I'd actually rather find Flammulinas than win the lottery. I came back empty handed, but had a wonderful time.
Into the aspens:
Things growing from aspen:
I havn't spent much time in the aspens, they're fascinating:
Peniophora rufa:
I decided to go wander around in the neighboring cottonwoods:
On the way I found some berry beary bear droppings:
Into the cottonwoods:
oysters:
Cyathus striatus:
Pholiota sp., these parasitize live cottonwoods:
I thought this was maybe Gymnopilus at first, but closer inspection revealed scales on the cap, steering me toward Pholiota. Growing from alder:
Some shaggies from the other day:
It's been a great season, thanks to everyone who shared it with me.

great stuff landsnorkler
I haven't seen a whole lot of aspens out here, small groves of quaking aspen are scattered around here and there but the leaves look different than the ones in your pics...
good luck with the flammulinas. I've only found them once, at random, on old cherry stumps in late winter. haven't really ever gone out specifically hunting for them though...

Yeah, I don't really understand why I want to find them so much, apart form the fact that I havn't found them, and they fruit late in the year, and apparently have magnificent flame-like caps. I mostly just want to get a good picture of them.
Aspens are sort of an unexplored territory for me, too. Maybe we'll have to go on a balls to the wall Flummulina hunt someday.

I don't know, I've never had either variety, but I've heard they're both pretty mild, with the one from the wild having a little bit of a slime problem, which can be removed.

Landsnorkle, imagining myself trudging through the forest and coming upon the view that you caputred in image P1011050.jpg has been the catalyst for some sense of euphoria, although brief, in an otherwise benign day. My mind will continually wonder back to that spot while I essentially rot away as I engage in the menial and pathetic status quo affaires of the day.
Your exotic variety of mushrooms are also very interesting, far different than the canonical specimens I see.

Nice pics! Good luck with the Flammulina....they are VERY slimey. The ones I found were on a living tree.
-------------------- Mr. Mushrooms said: I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC. I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi. I really do. I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them. I think they are beautiful. I even dream of them.

Word, thanks guys. Drama, I'm glad the beautiful scenery made you feel that way. Montana is a very special place. I'll try to get in a couple more sessions before the snow settles in.
