How cold until mycelium death?
    #912979 - 09/27/02 05:44 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Hello. How cold can it be before mycelum of P. Cubensis dies?
I am guessing that it goes dormant during winter and revives itself come springtime?

Well I've heard of people putting there jars in the fridge for over a year, so it can get that cold. I'm not sure the minimum survival temp. If you're speaking outdoors, it depends on your climate. Most of the the Cubensis in America that grow in the wild are confined to the southeast. So if you live in Minnesota, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the mycelium will die, but I could be way wrong, or maybe there's something you can do to prevent this. Good luck.

I was wondering this too, I have some beds outdoors that I am worrying about this winter, it gets down to maybe 20 deg F here like maybe 3 or 4 times during the winter. How deep do you think the mycelium has to be to survive?? I know once you get down about 2 or 3 feet, the ground maintains a constant temp of 60-65 degrees. Any feedback would help a bunch.

I could be way wrong, but I think 2 (maybe) to 3 (almost definitly) feet deep would be too deep for the mycelium. I can't find it now, but I have a gardening book that tells how to deal with plants in winter, so you may want to go to google and do a search to see what to do.

Think about it mushrooms are 90% water. If it freezes structual damage occurs at the cellular level. Bellow 32 deg = death. I think anyway.

Yes, mushrooms are 90 percent water. But the mycelium......?

There are lots mushroom species that grow in the Yukon, Siberia, all around the world in areas frozen for months of the year. Although mycellium cubensis does not normally experience sub-zero temps, it would likely survive if frozen.

I'm gonna get frozen someday myself and when they defrost me in a couple hundred years, I still expect to tap dance!!

They will continue to grow in 68*F temps . Just very slow . As far as "just how cold " before mycelium will die , experiment find out . But as CaptMax said there are species which lay dormant in sub-zero temps, in some cases for months at a time or even years . People who do multi-spore cultures , store their selected strains at 38*F to slow growth to a stop so that the strain can be used at a later point in time . I am sure some tropical species will have a harder time reawakening from colder than 32*F , but will awaken non the less .
