Well I can say that beer does promote bacteria growth quite easily. The ingredients will explain why. As far as your idea sounds like a fun experiment. I thought about beer as a LC candidate before but never tested it. Have at it why not man, if you have some shit incubating that your waiting for already and are board as I am try some off the wall shit who knows right?

My idea was diluted beer with distilled H2O, ratio I was unsure of maybe that's what put me off. Hell try 50/50.

See my whole idea was to disregard honey/karo altogether. If it were to become a new tech in my eyes it would have to be beer and water with no other additives and work effectively. I mean there are a lot of juices you can do this with to but, I thought beer would have a secondary agenda in a persons life like mine, get drunk then make LC from the left overs LoL. Try it man if you have the means too

And to grod31. I kinda figured that idea wasn't original though I had no prior notion to it I thought it could work giving the right ratios. Good to know it did work for someone. Me personally I rarely do LC anymore.
Fear & Loathing is a fucking classic it should play here on a regular basis served with popcorn with early admission....

I made numerous beer experiments several years ago, all resulting in failure or very poor performance. Even when the beer is boiled first to help remove the alcohol, mycelial growh was extremely poor. RR

Always good to see RR chime in and lay the record straight, for us curious folk. Thanks again to the experience of a true veteran of mycology!! I'm sure now the thread can be closed... but wait I have a great idea for beer and mycology that cant fail...... Ill chime in later to spread the results...

Im not an expert on beer making or mushroom growing but I dabble in both and know a little. The malt extract that everyone is so fond of here for LC and additives to agar is a key ingredient in beer. Malt extract is the sugary syrupy extract from barley, you boil this in a large kettle and add hops to make wort which is beer without yeast added. When yeast is added it consumes the sugars and starches and its byproduct is some sort of gas and alcohol. As for beer promoting bacterial growth I would disagree because wine was drank in preference to water for ages because of the alcohol content killing bacteria (thus a safer drink without modern water treatment). As RR said growth is poor and I would imagine this to be because the yeast has already consumed all of the sugar/starch therefore leaving nothing for the mycellium. I bet if you used wort as a LC which essentially everyone has been doing minus the hops it would work.

I can dig that. I think wort would work as a LC, but why do it that way is what we need to think of here right so it wouldn't be an efficient ay of making LC. But in my defense of beer promoting growth of bacteria it truly does period.

Well the isotopic alcohol we use for cleaning certainly isn't promoting any bacterial growth.

Isotopic alcohol? What isotopes does that contain exactly?
