is humidification necasary for jar incubation?
    #9118766 - 10/22/08 10:28 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I just inoculated my first jars this morning, and they are being incubated at a temp of 79 F, and humidity of only 24%. My question is if the temp is adequate and if not where should it be? Also, is humidification required for incubation of the wheat berry jars?

any feedback would greatly be appriciated!

Temp is fine - and I'm gonna guess that the moisture in the jar should provide enough humidity for colonization..

You're fine, but the air in a box can easily get stale and cause problems.  I colonize jars on an upper book shelf in open air.  Even in winter, it's usually warmer near the ceiling, and normal room temperature(74F to 76F) is fine.  You might get slightly faster colonization at 79F to 81F, but the difference is negligible really.

as a matter of fact I have the jars sitting on a table in the middle of the room because the whole room is heated. Im not to worried about airborne contams because the room is lined with painters plastic and i Lysoled the shit out of it before inoculation.

Just be very careful working in there.  That plastic is a fire hazard, especially around flames or heaters.

Your signature is wrong on colonization temps!

GOOD JUDGMENT COMES FROM EXPERIENCE
EXPERIENCE COMES FROM BAD JUDGMENT

ROOM TEMP 70-75 IS BEST FOR COLONIZATION

make yourself a simple glovebox and clean it with soap and water. Do inoculations in that. Then you dont have to lysol/oust/bleach bomb everything.

Incubating jars have contamination filters so no need to worry about contams getting in.
