Will a big pressure cooker break my stove?
    #9114217 - 10/22/08 05:39 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

So I currently own a 16 presto and was wondering, if I bought say and AA 941 or something like that....would it break the heating elements on my stovetop? I have an old electric stovetop (by old i mean late 90's) and my larges heating coil is about 12 inches in diameter...

If it is too big then what could i use as an alternative heat source, or are there any good compromises. I just hate having to PC for like a full weekend to get 24 quart jars sterilized...

Thanks in advance :grin::thumbup:

i think that pressure cooker has a convex bottom so it will not sit properly on your electric stove.  you would need a different heating source like a gas burner to properly heat it.

Absolutely not true. You will be fine with your stove, it will not break it. You MAY get some discoloration of the stove top but a 12" element is perfect for a 941. A coil type burner or solid french style are both fine.

I never was lucky enough to have a 941 :slitwrist::suicide: But I did used to use a 921 on a stove nearly the same as the one you are speaking of and never had a problem,I'm guessing only those ceramic stove tops are really in any danger of breaking under the weight of a big PC

You'll be fine, as long as it fits under whatever counter you have above your stove .

You will get discoloration from the heat .

I set mine over 2 burners on my electric stove , most of it on the big burner with the rest on the smaller one behind it .

you can do that 2 burner thing if you really want to, but one large 12" burner will be more than plenty. Most likely she does the 2 burner thing because, well her stove is too small and it has to sit on 2 burners pretty much or shes ont he cabinets heh.

It will work fine.  The AA-941 DOES have a slightly convex bottom, which makes it perfect for electric coil type stove elements.  What your not supposed to do is use an AA pressure cooker on glass top stoves, which suck anyway.

Unfortunatly IME,

I only have 2 of the 4 burners left on my stove, from the pressure cookers. I have broken both of the big one's and am forced to use only the little (which still work quite nice).

I can only blame this on my old roommie who use'd to slam the pc's around on top of the stove. He wasn't careful at all.

They broke the two prongs that plug into the stove. Broke at the hinge, not actually the coil. I hope this helps, but I don't think you'll have a problem if you are careful.

I spent 3 years before I saw them break.

Oooo, I've seen this before.  The ssh,ssh rhythm of the weight just put my ass out watching TV one night.  I woke up about three hours after putting it on and the whole thing was sitting up on the bottom which had bubbled outward.  Luckily I was able to peg it w/ a hammer a few times and get it right again.  I don't know how it didn't damage the seal.

Any appliance store in your town should have replacement parts, or you can get the model and serial number from the nameplate and order parts online.  That's cheaper than buying a new stove, and far less of a pain in the ass than doing without two of your burners.

ok so i would like to know what kind of pressure cookers you guys use...I am trying to figure out which model i will purchase...and for the record im currently using 36 quart jars and around 60 half pint jars for PF and grain spawn, and i also have 6 half-gallon jars that i may be able to use in a larger PC. As more jars become available my projects will become larger...so i assume a large PC would be ideal.

again thanks for the input guys :thumbup:

My time to shine. As an appliance repair man I can tell you this. Large, heavy, frequent loads will trash an electric surface element. I frequently repair a bank of three, three year old Hotpoint ranges that are used in an institutional fashion. They make batches of tea in large stockpots that are too heavy for the equipment. They must  have paid me 1,200 in labor alone this year just to replace surface elements. I try to tell them, management won't listen.

The problem lies in the elements supports. Usually the supports just sit freely so to speak under the coils. Element gets hot, transfers heat energy into the cooking vessel and so on. However, if the vessel is too large, heat cant escape from the bowl under the element, warming the supports to the point that they start to bend sideways under the load. This causes the element to sag, innevitably leading to failure of the element recepticle.

Good news, there are suppliers out there that have heavy duty elements. The best OEM burner was put out by GE. Not only are there the traditional supports, but they are cross-braced and the element ring is actually fixed to every support on every ring, not just one support in a few spots.

whereabouts could i find one of these...and could a reasonably resourceful man replace the element with help from the internets for instructions?

I can PM you with a part number tomorrow. I dont have any of that shit on this PC, I have to look up GE parts from the offices computer. Good news is they just pull right out, usually. PM me your model number, it is located either on the frame around the oven cavity or behind the storage drawer. That will tell me everything I need to know to beef up your range for hardcore use.

All depends on what I'm doing

AA are by far my favorite .

And for doing big things , like 36 quart jars , a 941

handles the job just fine:grin:

You Shined!~

I have a heavy duty GE stove with the elements that you just described...

I've been using this stove for over 15 years and haven't had to replace any of the elements...

and I've been using the AA 910 and AA 930 on it for the past 9 years or so, and a AA 921 for the past year.

I always wondered why I haven't burned out one of the elements.

Thanks for the info.

I have a Range hood that sits kinda low and I can just barely get my AA 930 under the damn thing...

there is no way that I could get an AA 941 under there...

I found a AA 941 on thecraiglist awhile back for $125.00 and had to pass on it since it wouldn't fit on my stove.
