Contamination and Mycelial Growth
    #9093361 - 10/17/08 07:36 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I have 4 jars that I thought may have been contaminated with bacteria but now Im not so sure. I thought I detected a strange odor from the jars a week ago, but the mycelium continued to grow and now my jars of rye are 100% colonized. I want to case the colonized grain, but I have a health question. If I had bacterial contamination but somehow the mycelium colonized anyway can I still try to case the grain and see if it will grow. I opened one of the jars and poked around at the grain to make sure the mycelium had ran throughout the grain and it smells like mushrooms. If there was/is bacteria will it just prevent any further growth or could I grow bad shrooms? I know this is probably a stupid question but Id rather be safe.

Mycelium can fight off bacteria, do you even know for sure that the smell in question was bacteria?

If it smells right and looks right might as well go for it. If you have a Martha FC and your sure it was contaminated earlier I'd think twice about it in case it could contaminate other grows.

I've never been with someone who knew for sure that something was contaminated with bacteria and was able to say, "Here smell this jar, this is what bacterial contamination smells like."
Alot of the jars I've done in the past had a sweet smell to them, so I was pretty sure they were contaminated even though in most cases the mycelium continued to grow to almost 100% completion.
After a couple weeks in jars do grains naturally get a smell to them that I could be mistaking for contamination?

I dono how to describe it to you man I smelled mold smell at my job when I was first growing. Mostly Rye and WBS don't produce funny smells.

You should be advised though that mold mycelium is also white like mushroom. So it's not as if it it assured to be not contaminated just because it has white myc looking growth throughout. Look back at your inoculation procedures, if they were solid I'd wonder what it is you'd been smelling. If not it may be worth reading up on sterile inoculations. If your unsure post a step by step of your sterile technique.
