Help identify my rogue mushrooms
    #9075770 - 10/14/08 12:04 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I started growing some Panaeolus cyanescens a few weeks ago and had some issues with my casing layer and my mushrooms turning dark and dying.  A few days ago I noticed what appeared to be a mold that started to grow along with a different type of mushroom completely.  Here are some pictures.

Does anyone know what these are and how they could have gotten into my growing chamber? They look like a type of cube to me but I am not very experienced identifying mushrooms.  Any help would be appreciated.

There must have been some cubensis spores mixed in with your cyanescens spore solution.  The cultivation folks can probably help you more.

Most definitely cubes  Pity for the pans though, as they appear to be out-competed.

Well at this point in time I don't think I can do much to stop them so I guess I will just let them compete.  Does anyone know of any good ways to help one out or the other?

well, im no expert, so don't take this as 100% FOR SURE info

but, im pretty sure the cubies will rape your pans, you should head over to the cultivation forum and read up on cubes, for best possible yield

You can adjust the temperature to control your cube to pan ratio.  Cubensis doesn't mind it somewhat cool but pans need a warm fruiting chamber.

Cool pic!
Never seen anything like that :mushroom2: :mushroom2:
What are you using for a casing layer? Seems that you may need to adjust the pH.

I was just using bagged cow manure for both the substrate and the casing layer.  I read on a few techs that pans don't need a casing but now I am starting to believe otherwise.  I didn't add any lime or crushed shells to balance the pH at all.

you absolutely should NOT use cow manure for casing
Casing is supposed to be non-nutrious to the mushrooms
Go for Peat/verm+ph buffer, AKA 50/50+, AKA Jiffy Mix

As to your cube pins

I wouldn't worry about it. 2 for 1 right?

I knew something was going on there, I half expected you to say soil (meh, cow poop, same thing  )

But just as fr33d0mfry said.

That's one beautiful pic all the same :stoned:
