I'm planning on it.
...but I do want to know whether it's worth cloning before I do so.

That's what I was thinking. Do you know if it is found here?

My book lists Ganoderme australis, and says it and applanatum are impossible to tell apart by sight, but have microscopic differences, although the spores are different... so probably one of the two. I have no idea about IDing shelf fungi sorry
Doesn't mention edibility but doesn't say they're poisonous either

Send a sample of pore surface to someone who can do microscopy.
A new Ganoderma culture would be good for the community.
All Ganoderma's are medicinal even applanatum.

I would think these would be medicinal, like most ganodermas.
Its usually listed as inedible in field guides because its to rubbery, but you can make a tea out of them which is highly medicinal.

Ganoderma applanatum is currently being useed and tested for tumor inhibitors, immune stimulation, hemostasis, esophageal carcinoma, rheumatic TB and as an anti-viral for HIV.

Alright, I'll clone it and send a away a sample for microscopic analysis. Any ideas of who would be able to ID Ganoderma species?

Alright, I'll be working out where I found it on Friday, so I'll collect the specimen then. I'll cut out a section of the pore surface and dry it over the weekend and sent it to you early next week.

If it helps A.M. Young (2005) says Ganoderma australe have longitudinally grooved, brown spores with a germ pore (11-14 x 7-9 um), while applanatum are punctate and smaller (8.5-11 x 7-7 um).

Cool, thanks. Hopefully there will be some spores present in the pores of the sample I will be sending Alan, so that could help him ID it.
