Gyms and Blewits...?
    #9067629 - 10/12/08 06:18 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I went for a walk in the woods today (nature preserve, metro Detroit) and found these. I think I may have found Gyms (not sure which one) and perhaps a Blewit. I'm not too familiar on either, so help a fellow out... the "gyms" were growing in groups on dead wood near a swamp, and the "blewit" on dead leaves by a path. Never saw a mushroom with purple gills before.

I have another nature preserve literally in my backyard, and for some reason, there's barely anything out there. this other preserve, less than a mile away, is teeming with fungus. Theres many more I found, but these are the most interesting... take a look, if you please... spore prints are on the way...

"Gyms"?

"Blewit"?

1) Hypholoma fasciculare, spore print should be purple-brown.
2)Looks like a Blewit, but I have a hard time telling them from purple colored Cortinarius, print to make sure it is not rust colored.

The spore print of the first, from what i could tell, looks orange. definately not purple brown, but I'm letting it print a little longer, we shall see... I also noticed, that strangely, these mushrooms smelled like formaldehyde. That, with maybe a touch of clove, or something similiar. A strange, and altogether sort of unpleasant smell...

Should we wait?

Larger photos would have been better to see the necessary details that are often missed in descriptions.

1) Gymnopilus luteus.
2) Clitocybe nuda (Maybe, depending on the spores).

Nice work.

The spore print definately came out orange on the first, but the second one left no print! It looked fresh enough, but unless it's just a white print, I don't see it.

I'll remember about the pics. I take 'em in a huge resolution, but I don't like to make it take an hour to load my post, so I downsize them. I'll have to find something in between...

That says Gym.

The spore print should be pinkish-buff for blewit.

I'm considering going back today or tomorrow to look for more blewits, and I guess gyms... the luteus is active, right? I really can't conceive of eating anything that smells so badly of formaldehyde (and I've heard how awful they taste) but I'm sure someone I know would be willing...

Hopefully I can get a spore print of the next Clitocybe nuda... then I'm going to eat it.

Yes, luteus is active.

It's a good sign the purple mushroom didn't print well.  In my experience Corts dump spores, Blewits not so much.  You have to catch them in the right mood for some reason. I've had Blewits leave a decent print or none at all.  I have never had a Cort with the level of maturity yours had not leave a print.  This might be a good sign.

:goodluck:

That sounds like solid advice, thank you!

How do you preserve/store blewits? I remember seeing somewhere that they don;t preserve well...

I don't know how to preserve them.  I dried a few to test that method but I haven't eaten them yet.  Much of my eating will have to be a winter project.  Right now there is too much to do.

Maybe someone else knows.
