light yellow spots on mycelium...
    #9036738 - 10/06/08 11:11 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I have 5 jars right now, 2 of them are fully colonized and the other three are about 95%.

The jars are full of healthy, bright white mycelium.  But Ive noticed that there seems to be some water buildup in the jars in the form of condensation and there are small round spots of mycelium that look like theyve attached to the side of the jars almost, Im guessing from moisture.

I noticed a few days ago that these spots of mycelium are slowly taking on a very faint yellow hue...is this mold?? or is it because of the moisture?

Sorry I know the picture is useless, but as of right now I have removed the foil from the jars, hoping this is just a moisture issue, should i remove the lids too?

Any advice greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

i do not see the picture, however it is not uncommon for the mycelium to produce yellow spots "mushroom piss". could be due to moisture or it could be that the mycelium is fighting off a contam.

No worries - it's not contam and also looks like you're ready for birthing (wait 5-7 days after full outer colonization).

In the future try taking a picture 1. with the jar on a table and 2. step back a bit. Since the pic is pretty good resolution, we can zoom in to see  more detail. Standing 4 feet or so away form your subject (without a macro lense) makes everything more crisp. This works for me anyway. If you have photoshop or anything to crop the pic, you can do that as well to get rid of non-important background details.

Ok, thanks.  Is the moisture normal though? Should I remove the entire lid?

thanks.

Moisture is a bit high, but it should be ok. If you can't see any substrate (if the bottom and other side is as full as the pic) you could put it in your FC now. If it's still colonizing the center it will be a few extra days before pinning. Rule of thumb is wait a week after your jar looks like that then birth. If you haven't, watch the video on PFTek at www.mushroomvideos.com and do the dunk and roll. That video tells you everything you need to know from making substrate to inoculating, birthing and fruiting.

If you plan on getting more into mycology, I highly recommend buying the video.

Yellow spots are mycellium metabolites. They're basically antibiotics generated by the mycellium to fight contaminants or when the mycellium is stressed, usually due to heat. It's nothing to worry about - but jars with the presence of metabolites shouldn't be used for grain to grain transfers (you're using the PF Tek, so this doesn't apply to you).

I plan on waiting another week before birthing them and putting them in a fruiting chamber, a couple of the jars seem to be stuck at 95% colonized, I think because the temp. has been lower this past week, around 72.  I'm just hoping everything keeps going smoothly, I've never had a proper mushroom trip so I'm very excited.
