A quick question
    #9014358 - 10/01/08 04:46 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

My yeti just received his mycobag in the mail and already has his spore syringe so he is all ready to begin his process. However, he is unsure about something. How good does the air flow have to be for mushroom growth? Say the bag is placed in a refrigerator (obviously not turned on.) Just an empty, off, refrigerator. The door would be closed. Would there be limited or no colonization/growth because of the lack of air flow?

My yeti will be using the psilocybe cubensis B+ strain and the temperature will remain between 70 and 75 degrees. (kinda on the cold side, i know. but they should still grow fine, just relatively slow.)

I haven't done mycobags, so there may be better opinions... sealed with a filter patch, probably would be a contam issue, but I'm not sure how friendly an environment a dead fridge (with no ventilation) would be. They're insulated, so temps could climb as well from mycelium heat.

Just throw it on a shelf at room temp and youll be fine

eh...two problems with that:

1) it needs to be hidden

2) even if it was placed on a shelf, it would have to be in a closet or something because it has to be dark 24/7 for colonization

which actually leads me to another question but this one doesnt seem like as big of a deal. would the air flow in a closet be a problem? i'm guessing not because alot of people grow in closets and the airflow isn't as limited as a closed refrigerator.

It doesnt have to be in the dark 24/7 for colonization.  A closet would work just air it out once or twice a day.

it will still colonize if there is some light. other factors are necessary in order for any type of pin growth. put it on a shelf at room temp BEHIND a book.

Oh, sorry... I understand your question after re-reading.

A dead fridge would probably be a good place for letting the mycelium colonize the substrate. Leaving it on a shelf would work too, but the fridge idea wouldn't hurt. Low airflow is a good thing during colonization. Bringing the bag out after colonization would increase gas exchange, which would be helpful as well.

okay i have one other quick question then heh

the reason i was considering the refrigerator is because it's a few degrees warmer haha. if i grow it in the closet the temperature will still range from 70-75 or so but on some cold nights it might go into the high 60's. what i'm worried about is the upcoming month and a half that they will be growing. i'm hoping the temperature doesn't drop that much. i don't have the money to build an incubator.

Getting a slight temp drop, going from the fridge to the closet, could also be a good thing. High 60's at night, won't be an issue. The shrooms will grow a tad slower, but contam potential goes down as well. I've also read recently, that slow growing shrooms may be slightly more potent.
