Obama begins three days of debate preparations and May Not Return to D.C. for Bailout Vote

Democrat Barack Obama studied and practiced privately with aides in a Florida hotel Tuesday in the first of three days of intense preparations for his upcoming foreign policy debate with GOP rival John McCain.
Although Barack Obama argues that the financial meltdown is an “emergency situation”, he said today that he may remain on the campaign trail, rather than returning to the Capitol, to vote on the $700 billion plan.
“Look if we get a consensus and everybody is popping champagne – then I will probably be going back to campaign with folks who are having a tough time in places like Ohio, and Michigan and Pennsylvania,” Obama said adding, “If this ends up being a close vote or a vote where the outcome is an open question then obviously this is a top priority.”

So what's the big deal? That's what whips are for.
Anyways, McCain has missed way more votes since the beginning of campaigning than Obama has.

I would think McCain would have the same position. If there is overwhelming evidence that it's going to pass/fail depending on what you want it to do, I would stick to the campaign. Now if I disagreed with if it was going to pass/fail I would definitely go to show my opinion and vote the other way.
Right?

McCain Holds Key to Administration's Bailout Passage on Capitol Hill
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: If Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain doesn't vote for the Bush administration's $700 billion economic bailout plan, some Republican and Democratic congressional leaders tell ABC News the plan won't pass.
"If McCain doesn't come out for this, it's over," a Top House Republican tells ABC News.
A Democratic leadership source says that White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten has been told that Democratic votes will not be there if McCain votes no -- that there is no deal if McCain doesn't go along.
McCain has expressed concerns about Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's plan, which would amount to costing the American taxpayer two Iraq wars.

McCain will have to vote for it or lose the election....

McCain: Scrap Friday Debate for Bailout; Obama Camp: 'The Debate is On'
ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos and Rick Klein report: Sen. John McCain on Wednesday said he would “suspend” his presidential campaign to come to Washington to help negotiate a financial bailout bill, a dramatic move designed to seize a powerful issue.
McCain: I am putting all my efforts and energy into doing my job and contributing my full attention to the urgent situation at hand in our country, not focusing on my campaign.
However Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But reiterated Obama intends to debate on Friday.
"The debate is on," a senior Obama campaign official told ABC News.

Senator Harry Reid told McCain: Don't Come Back to the Capitol
A Democrat tells ABC News that in a phone call late this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., that it would NOT be helpful for him to come back to Washington, DC, to work on the Wall Street bailout bill.
McCain this afternoon suspended his campaign and said he would skip the first presidential debate in order to return to Capitol Hill to work on the log jammed Bush administration legislation, which as of Wednesday afternoon was in peril.
When contacted, the McCain campaign did not have any comment.

This bailout is such a godawful idea on so many fronts. Nevermind giving $700 million to this government that is unreviewable. I might sound like a dick but this is what happens when you give anybody who can half ass a signature on a piece of paper a mortgage. We'll recover from this sooner or later.

This is so absurd. As much as I understand Obama's position on sticking to the debates, not to get heat from McCain for missing the vote he has to be able to balance both just like he said today. He can't miss voting to stop the passage of a bill this outrageous and full of holes. He needs to be there on the front lines vouching for every American.
This bill costs each tax payer $2,500 per person. Our rebate check was a 1/4th. If you made that type of investment personally wouldn't you want something back for it? Mismanagement of funds to this magnitude blows my mind. It's so volatile who knows where it's going.

> As much as I understand Obama's position on sticking to the debates, not to get heat from McCain
The only one 'getting heat' for not sticking to the debate is McCain... the guy that suspended his campaign so that he could focus on his job. Meanwhile, Obama continues to take taxpayer money to pay his salary, ignores his job (as he is too busy preparing for a presidential debate), and chides McCain for not doing the same.
