The best proof for the impossibility of time travel...
    #8967752 - 09/22/08 11:23 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

...is that there are no time travelers acting as tourists right now or in the past.

Or are they so immaculate in their not wanting to change history that they are simply too good to slip up? It seems that Murphy's law would come into play eventually.

Or were they instead misbelieved, mocked at, and thrown into insane asylums?  How many "schizophrenics" who claimed they were from the future were in fact telling the truth?  How can we ever really know?  As going back into the past could potentially change the outcome of every action thereafter, the future that the time traveler predicts could be wholly false--thus invalidating all of his predictions and making him no different from a crazy man predicting things that aren't going to happen.

(Or have I simply been watching too much 12 Monkeys?)

Yes.  (Too much 12 Monkeys. I think that I could recite large portions of the film.)

Sagan: First of all, it might be that you can build a time machine to go into the future, but not into the past, and we don't know about it because we haven't yet invented that time machine. Secondly, it might be that time travel into the past is possible, but they haven't gotten to our time yet, they're very far in the future and the further back in time you go, the more expensive it is. Thirdly, maybe backward time travel is possible, but only up to the moment that time travel is invented. We haven't invented it yet, so they can't come to us. They can come to as far back as whatever it would be, say A.D. 2300, but not further back in time.

All of these options are rather disappointing.

I wanted to go back and see Jesus, dammit.

We have a time machine that goes into the future; it's called moving.

The closer to light speed you get, the farther into the future you go during the same time. :mushroom2:

There are plenty of time-traveling tourists.

But time-traveling police locate temporal discrepencies, hunt them down, and erase their influence on history.

So there.

Time travel is simple.  All you have to do is get going to aproximately 99.9999% of the speed of light.  Its as easy as that.

How do you know I'm not a tourist from the future. Because I am. I forgot to tell you because I didn't think you'd believe me. :pirate:

1. Time is a mode you were trained to think by and certainly not a condition you live under

2. Your already a sort of time traveller in the common understanding of the word

3. Want to get younger?

I was going to say something, but then Carl Sagan said it all for me. EVEN THOUGH HE'S DEAD.

Is Sagan a time traveller, or has he returned to once more stalk the earth? :uhoh:

Many-worlds and time travel:

Quote:

Time travel

"The many-worlds interpretation could be one possible way to resolve the paradoxes that one would expect to arise if time travel turns out to be permitted by physics (permitting closed timelike curves and thus violating causality). Entering the past would itself be a quantum event causing branching, and therefore the timeline accessed by the time traveller simply would be another timeline of many. In that sense, it would make the Novikov self-consistency principle unnecessary."

From da wikiwiki

I made a thread about this a while ago... I asked if the many worlds interpretation supported the idea of time travel.  To travel back in time is to travel through universes?
