if there are more horses' butts than there are horses.. then there is at least one horse with at least two butts...

What does the pigeonhole/dirichlet drawer principle have to do with P&S? Could you elaborate?

yes ..
a) there are more horses' butts than there are horses...
this is a well-known fact...
b) then there is at least one horse with at least two butts...
since a) is known to be true..then b) must follow from the DDP...however..no such horse has yet been reported.. at least not that i know of...so OT1H..that might make this thread more an issue of cryptozoology rather than philosophy.. but OTOH..if the said horse doesnt exist..then it would indeed have some very profound philosophical repercussions...

Not true. You could have all the horses have just one butt each, and the rear end of an unfortunate horse resting by itself.
You gotta stipulate the necessary connection of the horse to its butt before you can start philosophizing.

thats only true if you consider a horses ass to no longer be a horses ass if said horse is sitting.
kind of like the way you no longer have a lap when you stand up.

i guess you could build an argument around congenital acephaly..although that would technically be termed an abortion rather than a horse...otherwise..the case you mentioned of a living..breathing horse with only a butt and no head has never been reported either..so there is still a problem...

Hey, you never stipulated the horses had to be living and breathing. Have you seen The Cell?

but theres still a horses' head and a horses' butt in the pic..so even though there is an isolated horses' butt..it still doesnt add to the tally of horses' butts over horses' heads...

Yeah, well, cinema can only take you so far in philosophical discussions.
