Mr_Mushrooms is right, Agaricus. To have a chance to ID to species we need to know about bruising inside the stem (especially the base) and odor. And they are some of the more difficult mushrooms to identify accurately.

Edibility is variable. Some are excellent edibles, some are very nasty. Definitely DO NOT EAT unless identified to species accurately. I've been told that David Arora refers to Agaricus as the "lose your lunch bunch".

Yes. Cut the mushroom in half from top to bottom. Then use your knife edge to abuse the tissue a bit and watch for a few minutes, especially in the cap and at the base of the stem.

the smell is.. well, its ot hard to state.

Typical odors for Agaricus are:

Sweet, almondy (like almond extract or benzaldehyde)
Mushroomy (like the mushrooms are the store)
Mild (slight odor, mostly like earth)
Phenolic (like phenol, library paste, or metallic)

If it's not one of those just do your best to describe it.
