What are these - were growing in my outdoor plant?
    #8917261 - 09/12/08 08:42 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Just wondering if anyone can help identify these little ones.  I found them growing plentifully in one of my outdoor plants (hibiscus?) in NYC mostly under bits and piles of fallen leaves off the tree/plant.  I water them often and they just popped up - there are several clusters.  From my observation I'd say the caps are reddish speckled with some orange/yellow underneath, yellow gills, and purplish (some red) stems.  Currently growing about and inch or more high.  Smells like mushrooms but sorry I can't give more on scent.

It might be an active Gymnopilus.

What color are the spores?

Thanks for the help.  I'm going to work on some better photos and hopefully a print.  They got a bit bigger over the last two days ...

Yes indeed. As soon as I read the title I thought of Alan's G. luteofolius' growing in his flower pot.

Ok so here are a few more pictures and a spore print I let sit overnight.  They got considerably larger over the last two days (about 2" high or so) and curled the caps upwards.  The coloring is a slightly different overall now as well.  I'd describe the tops as yellow underneath with a reddish/purplish spots, red/purple stems, and the gills are yellow are maybe even orange.  I'd say the spore print is a rust colored orange.  They still smell "mushroomy".

Thanks for the help and info!

Gyms.

Nice find.

Although I don't see any signs of a veil so I suppose they're not spectabilis

Those are probably Gymnopilus luteofolius.  If you want, you can send me a print and I'll check it and post pictures.

Anything else these could be confused with that's not so good to ingest?  Also, if they've been showered with Miracle Grow while in the plant soil does that make any difference?

There aren't any dangerous lookalikes I am aware of and if there were someone else should have caught it.

From what I had to work with, your photos and the spores, I'd still say the same thing.

Gymnopilus luteofolius

Spores (6 x 4ยต, slightly roughened)

Page from Hesler's monograph I used to identify them.

Here you can see how small the ornamentations are:

Nice find!   We should all be so lucky.

you lucky dog:super:
did you have wood chips or peat or something else other than dirt in the soil or are those Gyms parasitic to the plants roots:confused:

In my experience Gyms eat dead organic matter, not live roots.  I would imagine it could be in competition with the plant but it could just as easily be helping it by breaking down organic matter like lawn-loving species do.
