Dali induced dream state
    #8915284 - 09/11/08 09:26 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I read somewhere that Dali used to use a strange sleep/waking pattern to induce a dreamlike state in waking reality.  There is a name to the technique but I forgot to bookmark where I read about it.  I have been recording my dreams a lot lately and have been analyzing them to my life.  I do journal entries and record my dreams on the back.  I decided I want to experiment with my sleep state more and want to attempt what Dali did.  If anyone has information (wikipedia will do) on what this technique is called lay it out.

I know Edison used to exploit the hypnagogic state for creativity.  He'd sit in a chair, holding something metallic in his hand suspended over a bowl, and proceed to go to sleep.  This would enable him to start the hypnagogic process, and yet when he started to enter real sleep his hand would relax, the ball bearing (or whatever object) would fall and hit the plate, waking him up.

Quite an ingenious method, actually.

The Native American's (forget what tribes) had a dream-like reality voyage that's similar called 'Light Foot'.
