Usually takes 30mins to take effect. You should be in bed with your eyes shut relaxing.

I used to take 250 micrograms sublingual, and I'd get FLATTENED!!
That stuff works on me big time.

melatonin is best taken at night, not in the morning. it HELPS you fall asleep, it does not put you asleep.

that's correct ... melatonin is supposed to work with the natural wake/sleep cycles, so taking it at an odd time probably wouldn't do much (or anything, it's hard to say) ..
I'd also add that, from my experience, it helps you to sleep whether you take one or three ... but taking more adds more grogginess upon waking ... so maybe start with one? I wouldn't take more than one, but it doesn't really do much for me at all, so if I want to sleep, I usually take 50 mg diphenhydramine (Unisom Full Strength) ... and it works every time.
probably too late for advice now though, it's already 8:30 here ... hope it worked for you.

Yeah, try valerian root or tryptophan instead. Too much melatonin at odd hours can really screw up your sleep cycle.

there was a guy who reportedly took something like 200mg during the day at a place that was doing studies on melatonin, no one was able to wake him up til the next day.

Yeah, and I was taking 1/4 of a milligram, and that was that. I've taken pretty much every type of drug in my life, but that was nuts.

I believe that not only does it work in cycles but the cycles occur due to the amount of light entering through the (closed) eyelids so make sure your laying down in a dark room. I could be wrong about this.

nope, you are correct. your sleep cycle is largely dependent on darkness. you do not sleep as deeply and do not refresh nearly as easly when there is light in the room.
