Hey guys, I'm not very experienced at all in IDing, but I'm pretty damn sure these are Big Laughing Gyms.
Habitat: Wood - Found in coniferous woods, growing from and around a tree stump
Gills: Rusty orange, attached adnate.
Stem: Yellow orange, some bulging near base
Cap: Yellow-orange, some very orange from spore drop
Spore print: Rusty orange (got all over my fingers!)
Bruising: Pretty much none
Location: Arizona - 89A in between Flagstaff and Sedona, 7000 ft or so elevation
Smell: Sweet/mushroomy/anise-ish
Taste: Bitter bitter bitter sweet
Thanks!

Big buggers aren't they? Haha. They sure look like the other photos of them I've seen. Never trust a noob though. If they are, how active are they? Worth the bad taste? Hehe

I guess its definitely a Gymnopilus, and spectabilis sounds like as good of a species guess as any. Its big and has an annulus so I'd call it that.

Oh yeah they're huge! And there were a hell of a lot more where I found them. Unfortunately they tend to be very weak -- especially in the US. I think I am going to boil a couple cups of fresh in water down to a drinkable amount.

I have heard that they sometimes lose their bitter taste when cooked. One guy I know slices them thin and fries them in butter to make them taste ok.

Oh very cool, I'll give that a shot. By the way Alan, I took a trip down to Sedona today to search some cow pastures for cubies...none at all. Humidity is pretty low so I shouldn't have expected any though.

Cubes don't grow naturally in California.
The monster Gym is Gymnopilis aeruginosus which comes in as large as 23 cm (9 inches).
G. spectabilis is next with a cap of 18 cm (7 inches).G. validipes and G. magnus at 15 cm (just under 6 inches). G. luteus and a bunch of others at 10 cm (4 1/8 inches)
All measurements are the largest specimens expected to be found.
The cracked cap on yours indicates Gymnopilus aeruginosus.

I'm in AZ actually, not CA. I was hunting for cubies because I've read a report of someone finding them here. There was even a photo posted. Was referring to this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/318054/an/0/page/0
Thanks for the info on the Gyms

Ahhh I see. Alan's comments in the other thread are pretty right on.
Yeah, Sedona is in Arizona, not California. I was thinking Fruits and Nuts when I typed it and both locales qualify. My bad.
I have a video of me and a bud grokking the oneness at one of those famous "powerspots" in Sedona. It was a "high" time.

I already told him that cubes don't grow in AZ but he is a real mycologist and isn't going to listen to any bullshit from the internet.
After all, only the people looking for cubes in AZ will find them.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, but if it is I'd like you to know that I respect your knowledge quite a bit. I know you have a pretty large amount of experience with mycology. I have no problem admitting I know nothing compared to you when it comes to mushrooms.
I'd like to add that I have a family member who frequently picks some sort of psilocybin containing mushroom from Prescott, AZ which is somewhat near Sedona. I've only seen dried specimens of his and didn't have the resources available at the time to identify them, but they are about the size and shape of cubes (dark brown, however) and are active at doses slightly higher than cubes. Definitely not Gymnopilus or Pan Subbs, which are the only active mushrooms on record in AZ as far as I know.
My point is that it is extremely probable that there are actives in AZ besides the known ones. Sedona and Prescott are where I'm starting my searching as I have two reports (one that I trust immensely) that there are actives in those places.
If you have any advice or input on the subject I'd really appreciate it.

You didn't ask me, but I'll weigh in anyhow.
This sounds suspiciously like an urban myth. Dried mushrooms in AZ? That's a shocker considering it gets 120o.
I suggest the easiest way to solve this mystery is to contact the family member and go from there. Ask for a fresh specimen and post a pic. I have no doubt there may be an unidentified active mushroom in AZ. Mycology is still in babyland and there is much to learn/discover.
Good luck on your adventure!

Thanks! I'll be making a trip to his spot sometime this week, apparently they are fruiting right now.
They are dried because he dried them, haha. They were picked wet. Yes it gets up to 120F here, but this particular area rarely goes above 90F in the summer, and is currently at about 76F during the day.
I would say it's an urban myth too if I hadn't seen the mushrooms, and discussed the trip with him
I'm sure I'll be posting some pics and a description of the mushrooms soon.

Hello!
Sorry to be the guy that bumps the old thread but, a lot of new and interesting information has arrived on the topic of finding less documented Psilocybe species. Reading the whole thread before reading this post would definitely be necessary to understand what I am saying.
First of all Cakes' hunch on finding new species in Arizona was actually correct- the funny, or somewhat ironic part, is that two new relatively undocumented species were found by Alan Rockefeller in different parts of the state of Arizona.
http://mushroomobserver.org/92234
http://mushroomobserver.org/58108
http://arizona-mushrooms.org/2013/12/31/radical-mycology/
The second of which has yet to be added to the list of active mushrooms under Arizona. The third link posts a little information on mushroom hunting in Arizona.
This is a good reminder that not all the information on these mushrooms are out there, and that everyone should continue looking for the unknown.

I haven't added P. strictipes to the Arizona list because I am not sure of the ID, and I think it may be a new species. I have people out looking for it and the next collection will get sequenced.

I live out in the Flagstaff area and may go look for it when the time comes around this year. Real interesting stuff, and I love the area around the San Fran peaks where you found the "strictipes"

I didn't find it, Dennis and Sam found it. I just uploaded the pictures.
The problem is that the only place where it is known to grow is ten miles from the nearest road.
