Spiritual Arrogance

Is one of the most insidious of sins.

Of course, if one is right then it is not arrogance. And seeing how everybody is right...

What if you think everyone is equally wrong, including yourself?

I hate spiritually arrogant people. I am much better than they are.

I think there is truth in most spiritual philosophies. I really don't think there is one that is the absolute truth.

How do you determine this?

I look at the behaviors of the people that follow such 'truths' and see nothing noteworthy.

Maybe truth is the wrong word. I see common themes in the teachings of yoga, Buddhism, Taoism and the newer interpretations of what Jesus taught. I believe that all roads lead to Rome.

The key word is "interpretations".

If I put you on a physical health program and tell you to run 3 miles 3 times a week; eat oatmeal for breakfast and have a protein shake before bed time, there is very little interpretation.

However, when it comes to spiritual health, the teachings are like looking at a cloud. You see what you want to see.

Have you observed that certain spiritual systems cultivate more or less positive change in an individual or social group?

Is it the student and not the system that makes it groove?

You may also claim that all religions and/ or spiritual systems are inherently distracting from a clear perspective.

Most importantly, does your system encourage you to disclose judgement either way?

I just read a lot of spiritual books and try to digest it all. I really don't give a crap what other people want to believe. I was on another forum and they had a rule about no posts claiming exclusivity of truth. I think you might call this spiritual arrogance. I liked that rule.

So what is your prescription for spiritual health?

No, and therein lies the problem. Large-scale studies show slightly worse behaviors than atheist/agnostic people.

Nicely deflected.

Neither atheists nor agnostics can be certainly defined as lacking in spirituality, as it neither requires a belief in gods nor a particular understanding of how things are.

I believe I understand, in part.

What "spiritual systems" did you have in mind?  This phrase does sound as though you are referring to organized religion.

IDK?

I am not totally sure I understand your question.

I am no expert in any system. I do not follow religion, that is full of dogma. Animist religions usually have a Shaman who works for the good of the tribe. Buddhism and yoga believe seem to be full of good deeds such as no harming, no lying, no stealing, ect.

My system evolves everyday and is a blend of everything I have ever read or experienced. I don't judge others path, each person is on the path that is right for them. I am striving to be in the present and realize that the world and duality is an illusion.

I say spiritual systems because Jesus, Buddha, the taoist masters and yoga masters didn't start religions. They did have things to teach about life and spirituality. People who didn't understand their teachings turned them into religions. I want to go back to the roots and understand the teachings.

My apologies. To clarify, I was being intentionally vague in order to provoke a wider range of responses.

axis_bal has provided another aspect of what I had in mind in his last two posts.
