How Does One Store Spores of Coprinus comatus?

Good morning to you all on this fine Sunday morning. I had a question that may be some of you might have an answer to. I have a mycelial syringe of Coprinus comatus on its way. After I grow my first batch of mushrooms, I would like to be able to store the spores to this species. However, as most of you know, C. comatus is very unique in the way it matures and distributes its spores. As the spores mature, it initiates a releases of auto-digestives enzymes that cause the whole mushrooms cap to turn into an inky black mess. Its so messy that its common name is the "Ink Cap Mushroom."
If the mature spores of this species are caught up in an inky black mess, how do I go about retrieving and storing the spores?
The only way I can think of doing this is to scoop up the mixture of ink and spores and put it through some kind of sterile separation/washing procedure. The best way I can can think of doing this is to mix the inky spore mixture with sterile water and have it stirred on a magnetic stir plate for a couple hours. Next, Id pour the mixture through a 200 mesh sieve followed by a 400 mesh sieve. After the second filtration, Id allow the filtrate to sit for a few hours, decant, and with a long eye dropper transfer the sediment of spores onto a sterile filter paper to dry.
What do you think? Would this work? Is there an easier way to do this?

you could take a q-tip right out of the box and and swab the gills right at maturityand then just store the q-tip in a zip lock =]
hope that helps

This thread was moved from Mushroom Cultivation.
Reason: Normally, we store the live cultures of this species. Shaggy manes don't fruit well in captivity, so we let nature do our work for us. We look for great fruiting strains in the wild, and then collect and clone them, usually from clusters. Did you have a specific experiment for the spores? I'll move this to the gourmet and medicinal forum. RR

Thanks. I like that idea. It's a whole lot easier than what I was thinking of.

Thanks for your comments. I wasn't thinking of an experiment for the spores per se. I was thinking more of just tinkering with the strain I just purchased. I was hoping to develop my own strain that didn't auto digest itself into an inky mess and one that had a higher indoor cultivation yield.

Though some spores may be caught in the goo that is left of the gills as they self digest, most are distributed by air. As the spores leave the gills digest. The gills are packed so tightly, if they didn't liquify the spores would be trapped on the opposite gill face from the one the were launched from.
To get a spore print form C. comatus suspend the fruit body in a jar lined with tin foil or paper, the spores will collect on the foil, the liquid at the base of the jar is not what you want.

I let them liquefy then added the goo to a watering can and watered my lawn.

I tip my hat off to you my kind sir. Thank you very much Mr. Falcon. As always it's always a pleasure to encounter those that know a whole lot more than I do. What you said made a whole lot of sense. It just didn't seem reasonable for the mushroom cap to simply auto digest. I look forward to not toying with the black goo.

There are spores in the goo, if I was saving spores to grow I'd make print with a foil lined jar. I think there would be less bacterial contamination with the initial spore germination.

Florida Mycology Research Center offers spore prints of C. comatus. It might be worth your time to contact them and find out how it was done.

Gee, thanks for the web link. They have quite an impressive spore collection. I'll go an ask.

I had planned to try using a syringe with sterile distilled water; injecting an immature, still closed cap with the water then sucking it back up.
I read about the method somewhere, apparently there is some spore release even before the cap opens.

Interesting technique. I can't wait to try this one out. Thanks!

Here i s an old thread about the same question: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/3146852
just collect the spores before the cap starts to liquify itself...
