Found 12 tasty looking caps in a nearby wood. I think i ID'd some "death caps" Amanita phalloides growing alongside, but i didn't pick so i have no pics.

I do indeed plan on consuming them in the not too distant future. I found them on a muddy/grass verge in a small wood all quite close to each other.
I plan on drying them tonight in the oven (whilst my parents are asleep), then when they're bone dry ill store them for perhaps a month or so until i feel like indulging.
I've tried amanita's twice before, both bought from shops at ridiculous prices, and had little effect from them. I'm hoping to have a proper experience from these.

Sir, I would not recommend drying them in the oven. Probably a terrible idea, not to mention the smell.
Grab a little fan and put em on a tray in your closet or under your bed. 'Tis the best way, and if you want to go a step further, get a bag of Damprid from Lowes or Home Depot and put em in a tupperware with the bag for a day. After a day or two of fan, and a day of Damprid, they should be cracker dry...

I don't think i own a fan...
I read that an oven on the lowest setting with the door propped slightly open is an effective way.
Also isn't heat important to convert various poisons (ibotenic acid - muscimol)?

Great finds!
I always dry my mushrooms by wrapping them in newspaper. It takes a couple days and you might be tempted to change the papers once but it works like a charm.
Of course if amanita's require heat?

Those are A. muscaria for sure. You probably did find death caps growing near them.
I don't think heat is necessary for drying but some people say it helps.
I recommend a fan or the computer case method which combines the CPU/power supply fan with a bit of heat.

I decided to go for the oven drying technique, applying heat to convert the poison.
Unfortunately..
Due to a Celsius/Fahrenheit mix up (on my part), i ended up cooking them at gas mark 5 for around 4 hours :s I kept pouring the juices which came from them back over the caps as the instructions said. At 6am this morning i removed the mushrooms, which were not yet dry as my parents were waking up. I placed them in newspaper by the window.
The mushrooms are darker now, and most of the red from the caps have disappeared.
My Q. have i completely destroyed the muscimol/active compounds? I read that the melting point for pure muscimol is 195 Celsius.
If anyone's interested ill get a pic up.

You have not destroyed the active compounds but you have also not destroyed the toxic ibotenic acid.
Next time try using a fan.
And don't eat too much, start out with just one mushroom. If you eat too much your parents will take you to the hospital when they find you drooling on the floor.

That same thing happened to a friend of mine... He said it was not a fun experience at all... That has kept me from trying them even though they grow all over around my place.

okay. so Why hasn't the heat broken the ibotenic acid down? Can i still remove the ibotenic acid in some way? and will simply drying with a fan convert the poison?

Late to the party but...excellent advise.
One year I harvested 40 pounds of var. formosa and dried them on the bed in the guest room by blowing air over them with a box fan. It was the only way I could dry them all at once before they began to decay.
It took 3 days!

I've tried them and went to the hopsital, be very careful. I'm sure you and others are fully capable of having a good time with them even though I didn't
