Artificial enhancers
    #8885730 - 09/06/08 08:52 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Back when I used to breed reptiles I came up with the idea to put cichlid (fish) color enhancers into the rats I was feeding the reptiles (completely safe). The result was some of the best looking/vibrant colors you could find in the business.

Has anyone come across anything similar in the mushrooms business, something that'll make them grow faster/bigger/stronger etc..?

p.s high ideas ftw

Adding weak liquid coffee to grains can help speed up colonization.  Nobody really knows why this is so.  I suspect it has as much to do with the lowered pH as anything, but coffee also has lots of food fungi love.

Horse manure and/or coir seems to be the substrate of choice, mostly due to texture.  Adding gypsum to substrates gives a definite boost in health and vigor. With some species, commercial growers report up to a 20% increase in harvests from the addition of gypsum alone.

Vermiculite will help hold water and also tends to stimulate pinning.  Just about any substrate but straw can benefit from adding 10% to 50% vermiculite by volume.  Good luck.

I'm actually watching your dvd a friend of mine let me borrow as I type this, I'm on "Cloning Mushroom Tissue" right now. Everything you've just said is mentioned in your video and I have made notes on it all, lol

I really appreciate this reply, it further solidifies what I've noted as "must have" steps in my growing process.

I always thought that coffee was basic since it is bitter, but a quick google search suggests that coffee has a pH somewhere between 5 and 6.9.

EDIT: added linkification to google search

i think it is basic because of the alkaloids in it

alkaloids tend to be bitter

I think you are confused, alkaline = basic = pH higher than 7.
