    #8881396 - 09/05/08 09:41 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

now i didnt pressure cook or sterilize in any way i just used an unopened bottle of honey and water and only cracked the lid to get the spores in

Most likely you will get contaminants just depends on how dirty your hose hold air is I suppose..  But also I don't think it will take because you are suppose to heat up the water then put the honey in so it dissolves the honey throughout the water.

I will be watching for results..

If you succeed with that tek then you are very lucky. But from my understanding the thing that gets most LCs is bacteria which may not be noticeable until you try to inoculate something with it. Check this post out from Blue Helix for a bit more info.

yesterday i made another one too
but this time i put some water through the coffee maker to heat it up
took an ice tea glass bottle, rinsed it with filtered water, put in the honey(a little bit more than the waterbottle) and the hot water and shook it up until it was all disolved.  then shot the spores in
this is already showing the white specks.  could these specks be myc. or bacteria/mold

It will be really hard to tell if it worked or not..  Your best bet is when it's ready to take a bit and use it to knock up a 1/2 pint or 1 pint test jar and see if myco or contams grow..

If you don't have a pressure cooker you can't properly sterilize WBS or even LC for that matter. Stick with PF tek till you get one.

The PF tek is so good for noobs largely because you don't need a PC to properly sterilize BRF, but if you use grain or WBS boiling is not enough to do the job. I do not know for sure if you can get away with boiling LC or not but if you can I don't think its recommended.

It is recommended to PC for a reason. But yes steam will work in my experience; I have steam sterilized WBS*, less than 250 ml of LC and countless other things with success. You can also microwave your LCs I have not tried to microwave anything else though. I have had better success with steaming LCs than microwaving LCs.

*Edit: I should not say I have steam sterilized WBS, rather I should say I have fractional sterilized or tyndallized WBS: What is tyndallization?

There are lots of people who do not use a PC to make liquid culture. You can even go bulk & do clones without a PC if u use cakes & LC.

I am getting my PC today and I knocked up a liquid culture last night by boiling. I used this guide: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5238137

But I am using this guide when I get my PC in a few minutes!
http://www.shroomery.org/9378/High-Quality-Liquid-Culture-Step-by-Step

The first one was easy, boil for 30 min, fill with a cup, read somewhere that it should be 4cc's of honey per 100ml of water. Use boiled water. Also honey will dissolve in cooler water but at a slower rate! Heat only speeds up the process of breaking it down into a solution (freshman chem guys!). Anyways good luck, you never know with these mushrooms. They do weird things I hear. But yes, even buy a $40 pressure cooker at bed bath and beyond or walmart.com even if you can only pressure cook 1/2 pint jars, you will not regret it!

I also tried to make a LC about a week ago. Used about 4% honey. Now the liquid is almost clear (opposed to the light yellow colour it was) except for what looks like white/beige "dust" on the bottom of the jar.

Is this the early stages of myc growth??? Am I just being impatient?

I got the impression that myc in LC was "stringy" as opposed to looking like tiny specks.
