Hi all,
I just thought I'd post where one can purchase micronized gypsum and micronized calcitic lime. The increased "reaction" time of micronzied gypsum and calcitic lime should be very useful when growing fungals as they are grown for such as short period of time. Micronization offers greater immediate release of Ca, S and pH increase.
If your not familiar with the term "micronized" it just means really small, yet bigger then nano-size. Micronization is a process of grinding, etc to breakup the substance into fine size. The fine size of the particles makes the nutrients or pH adjusting attributes they offer have a much faster reaction time. It also increases the water solubility and they mix more throughly throughout the media do to their smaller particle size.
The most often recommenced micronized size is about 100% passing through a 50 micron screen or smaller.
Most gypsum and limes (h.lime or c.lime) will list its "fineness". Or the % of material that will pass through X size mesh screen. The higher the % and higher the mesh size the better, this means smaller particle size. If you can find the listed mesh size where 90-100% of the material passes though you can use that to find out the micron size.
If you have the mesh size copy it down and go to this conversion site, ideally you should shoot for 50 or less microns: http://chemplazaonline.com/meshsizecoverter.aspx
Heres where you can find the products: I like www.groworganic.com and they ship fast too.

This is what I use and it adjusts the pH immediately. $7 for a 50 pound bag at the local feed store. It's a fine powder. Granulated gypsum is fine to use however, and doesn't need to be ground very fine. Many growers smash a piece of drywall with a hammer and it works great, chunks and all. RR

Hi RR,
How ya doing?
Yea hydrated lime does have a fast reaction and it's way easier to find and a bit less expensive too, thats for sure. But, I like micronized calcitic lime for the same main reason: Immediate pH adjustment, and besides, it's like a two for one: pH adjustment and Ca. (sweet )
The main reason I prefer c.lime is it offers less risk of 'burning' mycelium, though I realize the risk is low anyhow if people follow the suggested application rate of h.lime in casing. Hydrated lime is also a bit caustic and kinda hazardous to use without gloves, etc. Micronized c.lime is as good of a pH adjuster as h.lime and it offers Ca too without the caustic attributes or possibility of harming mycelium.
Have you tried or do you know of other mycologists or fungal farmers who use or have tried micronized amendments?
I've used micronized amendments for a long time in horticulture and I really prefer micronzied over other grade options of amendments. Micrnozied matter offers hundreds and even thousands of times more surface area then larger grades of amendments.
In lower fungals (e.g. microbes) greater surface area means greater ability of the hyphae to utilize (breakdown) the amendment. I would assume hyphae of higher fungals (e.g. p.cube) would also benefit from a greatly increased surface area (as do other microbes). What do you think?
I'll post a good source of un-sanitized and micronized marl once I dig up the information of my distributor.
Hope you have a nice day

Oh ya,
Every time I click on an image to enlarge it, or a file to download it get a page with the following icon labeled "bad.gif".
I use Tor to access this site but I've also accessed it from other, non-Tor IP addresses (not mine ) and I still can not see enlarged images, etc.
Any idea what may be the issue? Thanks
