panaeolus antillarum, but no subbs?
    #8818908 - 08/24/08 04:48 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

There is a recent horse stable near me and I have been repeatedly checking for subbs in the manure/shaving piles.  Most every day this summer there has been some type of coprinus.  Well that all changed a few weeks ago.  There was a very small cluster of mushrooms that appeared to be picture perfect subbs.  I did not pick them, anticipating that there would be more to follow in coming days.  However, these "Subbs" just shriveled up and died and nothing more came of it.  Now the shaving piles seem to be repeatedly producing P. antillarum, but no sign of subbs returning!

Does anyone know why this might be?  I am thinking maybe it is too cold or too dry for the subbs (mid 50s at night, 80s during the day).  It hasnt rained in about a week but the antillarum seem to be growing (albeit slowly!)

Thanks

Mycelium fights each other for poop so sometimes you get one sometimes another and sometimes different species will fruit on the smae poop

subbs are growing in the lawns now so i assume they could fruit from the poop

What state are you in? there might be better mushrooms and better places to hunt for you... If your not having luck with subbs on horse poop you might want to try lawn subbs... look for new neighborhoods

You said "manure/shaving piles."  Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but in my experience horse poo with wood shavings is the piss poorest place to find Subbs.  I find tons more when they use straw as bedding.  I don't know why this is but I wish they would stop it.

For sure, I hate it when they use wood.
