Sawed-Off Shotgun tek - Hoping for RR comments
    #8793980 - 08/19/08 02:31 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

I have no money to get a drill, and the extents I would have to go to, to get a drill, would be much farther than I'd rather go. I have 6 jars ready for a FC when I come back, and I'd like to transition those hard working networks of myc to their future homes as cheaply, and painlessly as possible.

Thus, I had an idea (yes, it made my head hurt) - Find a nail that measure roughly an eighth inch, and puncture twice as many holes as shown in the video at letsgrowmushrooms.com. Completely cover that FC with 1/8th inch holes, instead of the 1/4 inch ones - would this work?

I'll be back in about a week to check this - all input available would be awesome, as I will have to take quick action upon my arrival!

Thanks !

To start with useing a nail you will crack the plastic,

Second - go to a cheap tool place or even walmart and get a $10 drill it's not that much for all the time thats gone into getting this far,

or third put it into a FC without holes and with 4-5" perlite and just fan 5-6 times a day

drills are cheap, and good to have around mang...

but if you insist on using a nail, why not find one larger than 1/8" and smaller than a 16penny(actually that might be perfect)

heat the mug till red hot(like in a bed of coals) grab it with some tongs and go to town...?

repeat over and over...

then when you realize how shitty that way was, youll go out and spend 52309572 times less than the amount of effort you put into makin a shotgun FC with A NAIL!!!

First off this is a stupid idea as others have said, but second of all a cicrle is greater volume than two circles that have half the diameter of the first circle. It will probibly off the top of my head take ~3.14 times the ammount of circles for the area to be equivalent.

You could use a nail but instead of hitting it through the plastic with a hammer, get yourself or make yourself and alcohol lamp.  Hold the nail with some pliers or something and heat it up to red hot, and just melt holes through the thing.

This will take a while and you are better off drilling but it's something of a solution.

Also one thing to note is that you would need to make four 1/8" holes to get the same area as one 1/4" hole.

I say leave the nail for the wood and buy a drill.
If you don,t have the money then stay away from this hobby and buy some food.

i have seen them in the isle at that horrible place called walmart for about 10 bucks for the small ones.....they look like the type you would have in a junk drawer....i don't know how well that will work for drilling holes through plastic, but it might be worth the try?

It does tend to get expensive at points.

That's still a very cheap item to need, though.  Like everyone said, drills at walmart are ridiculously cheap.  I'd just wait till that next paycheck and pick one up.

this hobby is not that expensive at all...just use waht you have until you can do better...

i just took a kitchen knife and used the tip of it to kinda of "drill the holes". just take the knife and twist it in one spot till you get the size hole you want.

Totally.  You don't want to do the knifey-twisty tek, just either heat up the nail or get a drill.

I've used a 1000 fps pellet gun before. Just be sure you have a board or something inside the FC to catch the pellet, it will double in width and make an ugly hole + crack or just break the back side of the FC. You have to do one hole at a time, no exits. Takes good aim too.  The .177 will make about a 1/5th of an inch hole, so it's still kinda big I just use less holes.  You might also need duct tape to prevent cracking when you shoot it. Just an idea if you have one.

I think you're overthinking this.

anything metal and pokey will work. like ^^ said, heat it up, and make a bunch of holes.

then set up whatever you are going to use for RH. if the RH doesnt get high enough, cover some holes.
