Question Concerning cutting San Pedro

When a San Pedro is cut, the top scabs over and a new growth comes out from an areole. Why does the old base of the cactus look old and hardenned once the new cactus starts growing?

I'm eventually planning on cutting off the new cactus because it seems to have halted/slowed growth. Then let the cutting scab up and plant come around next growing season.

What would happen if I were to cut below the original cut (on the old stump cactus)???

I just think it would not be very pleasing to look at to have two stumps, then the new growth.

any comments/answers greatly appreciated, thanks!

it would just pup from the upper aeroles, no matter where you cut it and no matter if the stump is all old and scabby...
