Not enough knowledge.....
    #8760392 - 08/11/08 10:18 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all,
I was just wondering who out there craves knowledge like I do? I spend hours on the net, reading books and pondering. I don't even care what I'm learning (to some extent)
It's like I feel my brain will die if I stop learning.

I almost think it to be some kind of addiction.

Please tell me theres people out there who are similar?

You are not alone. Once you hit a certain age I believe your craving for knowledge can be insatiable. The only problem then is that your memory begins to deteriorate so you forget what exactly it was that you wanted to read. Which leaves you unsatisfied. Thats when you end up spending 4 hours reading about the red eyed tree frog or some other meaningless thing. Anyways nope, your not alone.

I was just thinking about this today. Both in the sense that you are talking about, a longer period of time, but also just from one moment to the next.

To realize a succinct segment, to just reflect on an entire moment, I think that would be it, some kind of backwards zen.

Tell me about it. I watch the news every night on TV, but I turn it off when the sport comes on. And I'd much prefer to watch a nature or history documentary than a sitcom.

It is an addiction, and Wikipedia is the crack

QFT. Many hours of my life have been wasted on this vast wellspring of semi-relevant data.

That is a myth. The older you get, the smarter you get. Unless you don't train your brain. Your brain is not affected by age, you brain is affected by doing nothing. Everyone has a perfect memory, we just don't know how to use it.

About craving for knowledge, I'm the same, but I realize, knowledge is pointless without action. You can read and know as much as you want, but if you don't put it to action its completely pointless.

I wouldn't say its a myth.

Of course you do accumulate knowledge as you grow older, but not everything sticks. And when you lose one piece of the whole picture, this is a significant loss; more significant than people make it out to be.

I mentioned nothing about getting smarter, I was stating your craving for knowledge grows. I would even say a fair amount of people loose their intelligence as they age.

It's also well known that as you age your memory deteriorates. I was just mentioning that the combination of these two conflict with one another.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that as you age, your critical thinking skills improve, but it is somewhat offset by the decline in your memory.

Well, ya-ah. But then, knowledge can be episteme or gnosis, and they have different goals. Fulfillment is not the result of epistemological knowledge - the accumulation of data. Gnosis leads to Ultimate Reality which in my world-view is the completion of human development.
