Lentinus Tigrinus on Eucalyptus Mulch Update 01-31-09
    #8743414 - 08/08/08 11:03 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

This is a documentation of my experience cultivating Lentinus Tigrinus.

This has been a very interesting species to work with. It is very vigorous and very anxious to fruit. a quart jar will colonize in 3 days. if left for more than 2 days after 100% it becomes a solid mass. this mushroom will readily fruit invitro and will even produce primordia on a single grain.

Here are some pictures of specimens from the original collection site. I lost my pictures of THE original specimen but these are the same species in the same location.

The original clone was a tissue transfer from the inner stem of a large specimen to a sterilized half pint jar of whole cooked brown rice. take off was quick, about two days. No contaminations were present. Colonization was slow, took about 10 days to fully colonize. Using this culture i made a grain master which was spread to 3 quart jars of wbs. Colonization of the wbs was very quick. 3-4 days for the quarts.

Eucalyptus mulch was saturated just below capacity, loaded into bags and sterilized. After cooling one quart of spawn was mixed with each bag. Colonization was complete with 7 days.

These protrusions formed while still in the bag.

The bags were removed, leaving about one inch on the bottom. Blocks were placed into a PMP. Pins formed within 2 days of birthing.

One block began to develop a greyish hue. I was concerned at first but it seems to just be part of the development of the outer mycelium. Similar to shitake.

Pins began to form quickly. Stems were growing long but caps were not developing.

A few small caps were forming but overall there was a problem

The coral like structures were an obvious sign of FEA problems.

I moved the PMP out into my porch last night and left the lid ajar. Even in just the last 18 hours the change in atmosphere has made an obvious difference.

Clusters are beginning to form larger caps. Developing pins are forming larger heads.

Here are a few more shots, some caps some mutant pins. I must say the coral/mutant pins are very interesting.

I harvested one mushroom to take a bite. It was very tough to remove from the block. The cap was someone brittle, splitting easily but not breaking. the stems are somewhat difficult to tear but are very soft and juicy to the teeth. The taste is very sweet.

I'm excited to cook a batch up but i'm not sure what method i should use.
Also what do you guys think is the best way to remove the mushrooms from the block? pulling them off removes sizable chunks of the block. Cutting is definitely easier but it might be a contam issue as the butts die off. This mushroom is very resilient though.

Well thanks for looking. I'll be adding more pics daily.

Great log. I have never eaten any of this group, let us know how it goes.

Not sure if this applies, but I like to cut my oyster stumps and then twist the remnants off after a day or two of its rest period. I find they come out a lot easier without taking chunks of the substrate with them. The couple days seems to make the stems weaken and die off, becoming limp and easier to dislodge and I figure anything contaminating the stems at that point wont have transfered to the block.

Good idea.  I wish I also have this mushroom to play around with and to taste it.

Nice log, haven't seen this species cultivated before. I wonder how it will turn out cooked? I'm guessing it will be pretty good if they are already sweet raw.

So I've read a lot of differing opinions on this species.  Is it a choice edible, or of marginal edibility?

Hey Waixingren,

this looks amazing, I hope they make a delicious dinner!
So far it seems to be a fast and easy colonizer.

Good work!

Harvest time and more pics

Thank you for all the comments everyone!
I'm having a lot of fun with this species.

The fresh air is certainly making a huge difference. These pictures are from yesterday morning.

I went ahead and just cut them off at the base. Some of the mushrooms are being invaded by tiny little brown bugs about 1-2mm long. They get scared and jump off as soon as you move the mushroom though.

I'm still having trouble deciding how to cook these guys. The caps are very soft but the stems are tough. The younger ones have softer stems. I'll have to do some experimenting to see when the best time to harvest is. The stems tear easily lengthwise. I'm thinking of dehydrating a batch and powdering them. I think they would make a tasty flour additive for some biscuits.

Here are more pictures from just a few minutes ago.

This block exploded with fruits over night

This is one of the strangest things i've ever seen a mushroom do. The coral structures formed heads and full caps! A very weird adaptation. :crazy2:

and lastly a small experiment. l. tigrinus on fermented woodchips. the woodchips sat submerged in left over poo tea for a couple weeks. Topped with soil. fruits were produced in about 5 days.

This species is extremely vigorous, i think it would be a good candidate for recycling paper wastes. I'm starting experiments with that now. I expect it will out preform oysters. I think L. Tigrinus is also much more resistant against contamination than oysters.

Thanks for looking.

one more update.

another interesting mutant

bonsai!

so i finally got around to cooking these guys. my first attempt was simply sauteed in butter. cooked covered on medium heat with just enough butter to very lightly coat the mushrooms. Browned lightly around the edges.  The taste was excellent. It was very hard to pinpoint the flavor. After much debate the closest thing my girlfriend and i could come up with was french fries. really good salted home made fries, not cheap fast food fries. The stems do soften up a little bit with cooking but are still a little tough. If the stems are cut to 1-3cm then there is no issue.

My second attempt was in a red wine sauce with a salmon fillet. Bad idea. The red wine brought out sour rottenness flavor accompanied by all the bad flavors of p. cubensis. :puke: The mushrooms were a very nice purple color though

I dehydrated the rest of my harvest. I'll be powdering it and using it in breadings for chicken and such.

This is probably the last update i'll have for this grow unless something crazy happens.

a little update for fun

First is L. Tigrinus on a batch of poorly pasteurized Timothy hay. I spawned yellow oyster and tuber oyster to the same batch of hay. Both of those quickly contaminated and stalled. The tigrinus laughed conquered and devoured.

Here are the eucalyptus blocks. the one on the left made quite a nice sized fruit so i took some pics. very nice meaty cap with a very short and chubby stem. This is the optimal fruit for consumption.

I blended a fresh batch of fruits into a pulpy mush and mixed it into some ground turkey for burgers. came out excellent. i also topped the burger with caps sauted in the burger juice. mmm mmm good.

Thanks for looking!
