B+ Monotub - 1st attempt w/pics (updated 8/4/08 - second flush)

To start I have to tell you that this is my first successful indoor grow. It was by far the easiest, and I thought I'd make this post to recommend this tek.
First and foremost I started by using ohmatic's monotub tek...kuddos for his excellent growlog.
I only had 4 colonized quart jars of B+, but one was doubtful so I left it out, ie, I only used 3 jars total. Also, I only had a 56qt clear tub lying around so I decided to use it, regardless of the lack of colonized grain.
I made 5 quart jars of 50/50 mix as per RR's instructions in this post. However, I couldn't find enough drywall to make enough gypsum, so I also used oystershells...actual oyster shells I ate the night before and crushed up, not the stuff you buy off the shelf. Then I pasturized the mix as per RR's instructions in the linked post.
I wiped the tub with alcohol, put my mask on, sprayed the crap out of the room with Oust, and got to work.
Unable to have 3-4 inches of colonized grain in a 56qt tub, I merely used what I had and reduced the amount of substrate. So I put about a 1/2 inch of substrate on the bottom of the tub, then about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of colonized grain over it, and then covered it with another 1/2 inch of substrate.
I put the top on the tub and let it sit for about 4 days. Note that myc started breaking through after about 2-3 days.
At the 4 day mark I put the mask on, sprayed the crap out of the room with Oust, got my drill and a tupperware jar. I opened the tub. Holding the tupperware jar inside the tub where I wanted to drill a hole, I began drilling from the outside. The only reason I did this was so bits of plastic wouldn't go all over the grow area. If anyone has a better idea on how to do this, I'd appreciate some feedback. I drilled four 1 3/4 inch holes on all 4 sides of the tub approximately 1/2 to 1 inch over the top growth layer. I then drilled another hole on two sides near the top of the tub, as per Ohm's tek. I filled all the holes with polyfill, put the top back on, and duct taped the edges of the top so nothing could get through the cracks.
I set the tub on a tv dinner tray in a room which receives indirect sunlight. Temperature variations in the room move from 69-80 degrees depending on the time of day and the weather. I left a small crack in the window and put a fan on at the other end of the room of where the tub was sitting so that fresh air could circulate. Note, the fan was not close to the tub whatsoever, it was merely there to make sure fresh air could ciculate through the room.
A few days later, primordia started to form. A day or so after that, pins were everywhere! Here's a couple pics of the pins after a couple days...

Excuse the picture quality, however, condensation in the tub increases a lot after pinning ensues.
Because I had a clear tub, side pinning was inevitable. The pic also gives you a little bit of an idea of how little substrate is in the tub.

After approximately 12 days after the holes had been drilled and the tub exposed to indirect light, the first flush was ready for harvest. Here's a few pics...

As you can see, the shroomies seem a little thin at times. This problem had been initially identified by Ohm, however, his crop seemed to have overcome the problem. IMO, it's a small lack of FAE. Opinions on the subject would be appreciated.
So me and my girlfriend got to it and harvested. We ended up with this...

We weighed out 280 grams wet and made a batch of Eatyu's Jello. Tried it, and it's amazing. Party on Saturday...but I digress. The total havest was almost 400 grams wet, hence, 40 grams dry.
After some deliberation, the amount of new pins present after harvesting were to good to resist, so we're going on a second flush now. The fruits are already thicker than the first flush's. This could be because the tub was open long enough during harvesting to really freshen up the tub. Some opinions on this would also be appreciated.
Let the discussion begin. I'll keep updating on the second flush when I get the chance. So far, I predict the second flush could weigh more than the first just because the nicest fruits are growing fater.
Anyways, once again, kuddos for Ohm's tek, RR's 50/50 recipe, and Eatyu's Jello recipe.
Happy trippin'!

Congratulations! If you want to prevent the side pinning next time, try putting a clean black plastic garbage bag into the Mono first. After you fill it with your substrate, use a utility knife to cut off the excess. Nicely done and bravo!

I remeber reading somewhere that with B+, the shrooms tend to get thicker and larger into later flushes. Don't remember who said it, have no personal experience with it, just what I read.

Ok, second flush was ready today. Not as many cubbies in this one, but they were definitely much bigger and much thicker. Here's a pic of the tub after opening it...I mistakenly picked a few big ones before taking the picture.

Here's a pic of the harvest...

And here's a pic of one of the nice one's I picked first

So as you can see, comparing to the first flush's shroomies, the second flush's shroomies were definitely less numerous, but definitely bigger and thicker.
The total wet weight of the second flush was 290 grams, ie, 29 grams dry.
We decided not to do a third flush, although many pins were present, because I have to move the operation back home within a week or so, but I'm sure it would have yielded something.
Total harvest from this small monotub project, about 70 grams dry. More than enough hehe
Anyways, hope you enjoyed this post...Happy trippin'!
