Grateful Dead - What should I get?

I've never really given Grateful Dead a fair change, and today I was thinking of downloading an album or two.
Which albums depict their style the best/which album in your opinion is their best album. Or should I say... if you could only have 2 albums... which 2 would they be?

If you really want to understand the Grateful Dead, skip the studio albums for now and listen to some live stuff.
internetarchive.org has thousands of live shows, however many of them are poor sound quality or bad nights or both, so wading through to find the gems is a lot of work (and most of the good shows are not downloadable).
Dick's Picks is a series of CDs featuring good live shows. Right now I'm listening to Dicks Picks 2 - Columbus Ohio Oct. 1971.
The thing about the Dead is that they were around for a long time and went through many phases.
You may find you prefer the very early bluesy stuff, the late-sixties uber-psychedelic trippy jams, the early 70s American Beauty/Workingman's Dead acoustic-folk-country stuff, or something else.
That said, I think everyone should own a copy of American Beauty. There are some amazing songs on that album.
Start with American Beauty, maybe pick up a few Dick's Picks from different eras, then maybe try Live/Dead, Aoxomoxoa, and Anthem of The Sun.
But that's just me.
Have fun and welcome to the Dead. Enjoy your trip.

Oh and as far as only 2 albums, I would personally get American Beauty and probably some Dick's Picks album, i haven't listened to many of them but maybe someone here can recommend one.

As of late, I've definitely been listening to a lot of psychedelic type music, so I'll have to give that a listen to. Late 60's you say... I use ruckus so I'll download a bunch and give em each a listen... thanks man.

What a great thread, and some excellent choices peoples!!
Platinum,...I have never heard of the software you are using for the Dead. Could you shoot me a link to it? I bought my albums, as a collector, but I have gotten a ton of free old dead shows from bt.etree.org legal live bit torrent for a LOT of cool artists, and each and every one of them signs a letter of intent, to allow the live show downloads for free to anyone.
I totally agree that live shows are best, as well as the different sounds the dead has had over the years. I think sometimes the Grateful Dead is an acquired taste of sorts, so to ease into it, check out the "best of the Grateful Dead", after hearing this you can better appreciate how they have a nack for making the same songs sound completely different in a live show setting.
Just my two cents..... I love em. always will.
It's a great thing that you are turning on to them man. They will bring you good times for sure:) \ Peace,
(what a looooong strange trip it's beeeeen!) Jerry Garcia

Their best album, not a question I could really answer.
But if I had to pick two, desert island style, well... let me think..
Reckoning for sure,
and Steppin' out England 72 I guess,
and infrared roses
But I much rather prefer bringing along some favorite shows as opposed to the albums, but thats just me

Then the Dead might not be your cup of tea dude, they have a lot of country-blues and folky numbers, if your just looking for psychedelic rock try Pink floyd or Jimi Hendrix. The Dead played it all. Listening to the Dead and not wanting to hear counrty music is like going to an Italian restaurant and not wanting any tomato or pasta.
hmm ok then. i like a bunch of their live stuff... got a good sound.

If you want a rockin album of theirs i would say get Dead Set its 1980 at radio city music hall, epic album. Also Live/Dead is good earlier music thats really psychedelic and still really groovin and rockin. I personally like europe 72 a lot but if you tried that already try those two.
