How much to charge for my drawings?
    #8678182 - 07/24/08 10:11 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

I recently had some one look at my artwork, and asked me to draw a home page for their photography site.

I just have no idea where to begin pricing my artwork.

This one took me 1.5 hours

This one took me about 2

And this one took me upwards of 6. I'm not really sure how much time was spent on it, i lost track.

How much do you think these could sell for? I need to get a good idea of what prices to put on which things. He insists that I make it a good price for myself also, but I have no idea where to begin when it comes to pricing my work.

what do you base that on though?

$500 for these three would make me wet my pants. That would be wonderful!

i just threw it out there.  now that i look at your time spent on it, that would be over 50 bucks an hr.  25 an hr would be reasonable.  i mean the shit looks cool as hell to me.  225 for all three.

base your price on what your time is worth, how much color, etc,

in graphic desing, especially for websites, you don't want to use more then 3 colors, or 4 with cmyk, especially with print, printed material is more expensive when using more then 3-4 colors.

All of your artwork is great, however, this person wanting an "edgey" personal site? or a business class site?

your artwork looks more to me like you'd be geared for video game arts, graphic arts, and wicked tshirts..

you i have no clue who you are, but just by looking at your artwork you don't appear to be a "deadline" kinda artist, you seem to go with what flows, with no subject matter in mind whatsoever,

Considering you don't have a "design space" and your artwork "freefalls" onto the paper, you've obviously not had professional graphic arts training/school.

I would say, 500 dollars for all three images wouldn't be that far out of the scope..

but if you're going by what someone else wants, then you'd have to put a price on your time...
taking direction from a "non artist" is fucking annoying,

$125 usd per hour is not uncommon for a freelance graphic designer, you just need to come up with a valid way to "bill" your time that could be admissable in a court of law, considering 80% of graphic designers never get paid for their commissioned work... which, makes a good valid point and reason to charge a minimum of 3 hours up front.

hope this helps.

keep in mind, having a digital online portfolio and a hardcopy splatter portfolio is most important trying to get that kind of price.

if you've had none of this, of course quote a price somewhat less then this, I am thinking, again, i don't know you, but you'd settle for 75 dollars an hour.

you have awesome talent...What you should do is make more art and you could start up an online store or something along those lines.

The guy does photography, and he used to photograph the Grateful Dead. He wants me draw things for him that have the same sort of theme as his photographs. Obviously they would still be in my kind of style, just more geared towards the sort of themes on the webpage.

$75 and hour is a lot of money for what I've done. I would be happy with $15 an hour, I really am not greedy. I enjoy drawing, and knowing that some one else enjoys it enough to pay for it makes me even more happy to do it. Especially since people will see it. That is all I could really ask for.

You should get some larger format or just higher quality paper like bristol or something. Check out an art supply store.  If you're comfortable working on a larger format, do it; they stand out better, both on the wall and in peoples' minds.  I've seen galleries in LA that have stuff like your drawings, I think you've got a real chance.

I've seen stuff in shows that sold for $250-500 a piece for that quality.

Good work, Drew.

 You guys are making my self esteem skyrocket!

Gah I love you all

Thats what I think I'll go with. $20 per hour sounds pretty good. The guy has an AWESOME acid hookup, so I'm gonna try to get paid partially in some lysergic happiness

while this kind of attitude towards your art and it being worth getting paid less is wonderful, and it makes me happy to see that someone enjoys so much, but realistically, graphic desing is a cut throat industry, and if you shortchange yourself now, you'll find that people will expect to pay way less then you want in the future. So in short, don't shortchange yourself.

might I suggest adding some professionalism by working within a design space, essentially, a shape, usually a square, within your papers edge, like a 1 inch border around your paper, and work only within that square / border, this would be called a 'design space' if anything just try it with ONE drawing, and side by side compare a drawing without it, you'll see it adds a good bit of quality to the piece.

I like your advice. And I like how you respect the fact that I enjoy drawing by suggesting I draw just one drawing like that to test the waters.

I very much appreciate your advice. Thanks.

no problem you're welcome!

imagine you do a piece, and it's good enough you decide 'fuck i wanna frame this', well

when you work inside a design space, u have room to matte the work, and frame it!

peace.

I very much appreciate your advice. Thanks.
