Scraping Uncolonized parts of a freshly birthed cake (help!)
    #8654461 - 07/19/08 09:47 AM (15 years, 8 months ago)

I just birthed two 1/2 pint BRF cups of Thai strain. One of the cups seemed perfectly colonized up until birthing when I discovered a small (smaller than dime-size) uncolonized patch on the bottom corner. Anyway, out of panic/intuition I scraped the uncolonized area with sterilized gloved (shaved a bit off the corner till I struck white). They are both dunking right now. I am planning on putting both of them in a FC when the dunking period is over. I do plan to case them.

My question is: How much of a risk is it to put both of the cakes together (keep in my I dont have much room to separate them). is the scraped cake in danger of contaminating the other?

No at all. I have up to 10 cakes in my FC which may be a little too much considering the size of the FC I use for cakes. Scraping that little part off isn't going to be a problems.

Much better to have scraped it off than to have left it on. IMO

Scraping is not bad by any means, keeps contamination from setting in.  But I doubt that they were there already if you just birthed the cake in my opinion.
