so I am terrified of sharks, though I think they are beautiful fascinating creatures. But just the knowledge that they are out there and you will never see them coming if they attack really makes me nervous.
I've been going to the ocean alot and snorkeling for the first time in some inlets. It's fuckin awesome. It is so trippy gliding under the water, taking in all the scenery. I actually surprised myself by snorkeling out in the open ocean. Close to shore, but still in the atlantic. I thought I would be too scared but I didn't think about sharks at all I was so mesmerized by snorkeling. Then I realized where I was and began calmly swimming back to shore.
Since then I've been thinking about sharks alot more.
A friend of mine took up surfing on the Maine coast and said he was just paddling and he saw a huge mako shark swim underneath his board.
have any shark stories?
oh yea, shark week on discovery july. 27

When I lived in jacksonville I was fishing off the shore, and a 6 foot bullshark was maybe 10 feet from me, I ran like bastards. I was in a little lower than my knees, so it was maybe 2-3 feet deep where the shark was. It was at dusk too though, you are more likely to get jawsified at dark.

Eh sharks have never really scared me. The only time I worry is if I start bleeding in the ocean.
There is this one place in Florida called Amelia Island that is well known for it's shark population. I've found many many shark's teeth on the beaches mixed in with the shells. For the record, Atlantic side of Florida sucks me balls, the Gulf side is where it's at for nice beaches.
One time I was walking around in the surf and stepped on a live conch. I dove down, picked it up, then threw it as far as I could. The spikes on the shell split my finger wide open and there was blood everywhere. I was young and dumb, still stayed in the water. I was out on a sand bar about 300 yards from the shore. My mom told me that there were some some black things swimming around me. I can only imagine that it was sharks. Sharks are naturally afraid of humans, so I'm guessing thats why they didn't bite my limbs off.
I'm more worried about other shit in the ocean that could fuck me over. I worry more about jellyfish than I do sharks. Shark attacks are very rare, people get stung by jellyfish all the time. If you are in Australia you are exceptionally fucked, they have the box jellyfish (potentially deadly) and the irukandji (always incredibly painful, potentially deadly).
Mantis shrimp (yes, shrimp) can fuck your world up. They have a modified claw that acts more like a basher/slicer that they "flick" at thing. A 6 inch mantis shrimp's hit can be equivalent to a hit from a .22 cal bullet. I've heard of them cracking the glass in fishtanks before. Sailors call them "thumb-spilitters" for a reason. They will seriously split your thumb in half.
There are also animals like Cone Shells and Blue Ringed Octopus. They both contain one of the most potent neurotoxins known to man, tetrodotoxin/maculotoxin (TTX). You get bitten by a blue ring and you're usually dead within 30 minutes of the bite. A lot of people don't even know they've been bitten because it's not very painful. After that the person feels a bit tingly in the face and mouth... Then their lungs shut down.
TTX is also the same toxin that Fugu(pufferfish sushi) has. The only way to survive TTX poisoning is to be put on a respirator before your brain dies from lack of oxygen.
Also, puffefish, triggerfish, and some wrasses/parrot fish have ginormous beaks for cracking shells... Problem is that they mistake toes for food sometimes. I've read stories about people getting their toes bitten off completely by pufferfish. Scary eh?
Thats not tall! Stingrays and venomous fish. Can't forget about them. The two serious venomous fish in the US are rockfish and toadfish. Lionfish are also very venomous and are starting to become naturalized on Florida's coasts. They are very poisonous, they kill some people. And, I saved the worst for last. Stingrays. They killed Steve Irwin and they ruined a month of my life. I stepped on one when I was walking through muddy water in a bay. I have NEVER experienced worse pain in my life. A stingray sting is almost enough to make me want to die. I've read that women say it's more painful than child birth.
My point: sharks are pussies, don't worry about them, worry about other shit in the ocean that's out to kill you

Ive seen lots of sharks near the beach. Ive also been scuba diving near big sharks several times. Its very rare that sharks attack people. You are about 20 times more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a shark, so if I were you I'd be much more worried about the dark spots in the sky than in the water.

When I was kid there were sharks beneath us as we snorkeled in the Florida Keys and we didn't even get out of the water or anything. The guide was like look at those sharks and we were like oh cool.

I've seen many sharks close to shore.
most shark attacks occur in less than 5 feet of water, BTW.
