coff/coir vs cof/coir/comp?
    #8652628 - 07/18/08 07:53 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

I've read conflicting reports on the effectiveness of compost. I'm unable to find horse poo compost and am beginning a project soon I'm wondering is it worth putting compost in with coir/coffee or not. My last grow with all three yielded low but I had a low spawn ratio and cased with verm. So, I'm not sure if I can make any solid conclusions on that.
I cannot get horse poo compost only steer, cattle, and sheep. So I'm not sure if I should include any compost or at what ratio (of compost/coirmix). I know I will add some Horse poo that I will have to gather myself, but that will likely hardly constitute 10% of sub since I have such a small supply of it.

I wouldn't use cow poo, it tends to get kind of umm muddy. I don't know about ship shit. If you are not able to get enough hpoo and have to gather it yourself, I would just use coir. But thats just my two cents worth.

IF you have the right kind of cow poo the consistency is more like dirt.

yea I can get some that will be more like dirt, composted I believe makes the difference. But will it's nutes increase yields in any significant way over straight coir/coffee? I'm thinking of limiting maybe 30% cow poo compost ~10% hpoo (field dried) then 10% spent coffee and 50% coir. If diverse subs are good this sounds good then. But does it sound like too much cow poo compost?
I think I may wiki sheep shit tonight just to see what's up. I mean a huge complaint about cow shit is the amount of processing that happens in their stomachs. So if sheep have less stomachs then it may be better more like horse nute wise. However there's always the texture factor too, you can't learn that one on wikipedia.

i think that ratio sounds good.  as long as the texture looks and feels right you know airy and fluffy it should work out great. but document it and see and then tweek it from there.

nope sheep have similar digestive systems to cows. Well shit I guess I can just put that to rest then.

Wiki says
Quote:

Physiologically, a ruminant, is a mammal of the class Artiodactyla that digests plant-based food by initially softening it within the animal's first stomach, known as the rumen, then regurgitating the semi-digested mass, now known as cud, and chewing it again. The process of again chewing the cud to further break down plant matter and stimulate digestion is called "ruminating". Ruminating mammals include cattle, goats, sheep, giraffes, American Bison, European bison, yaks, water buffalo, deer, camels, alpacas, llamas, wildebeest, antelope, and pronghorn.

so my idea of trying deer turds is out too. since despite it's appearance it is probibly not as unprocessed as I think.
