ID request -- West Virginia
    #8633395 - 07/14/08 01:05 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

Found this mushroom near Morgantown, WV last weekend (mid July).  This particular specimen measured about 6 inches in height, but there were other larger ones around.  It was growing on the side of a gorge under leafy trees (not sure what kind...).  Very meaty mushroom,  would be nice if it turned out to be edible :P

Nice scaberstalk, I believe! It could be a good edible, though some of the warm-colored scaberstalks are said to sit poorly with some folks. I only have experience with gray-brown capped scabers...

nice.  thanks for the help.  now that i think about it, i remember picking mushrooms in Poland where i grew up, and there were some very tasty boletes, and others that looked very similar but were bitter and inedible.

none that i remember looked like this though.

Definitely a Leccinum. ID to species, to start with, requires knowing the bruising reactions. Cut it in half vertically, then scrape the inside of one half with your knife edge hard enough to bruise the flesh. There are likely to be multiple color changes, the last of which can be up to an hour later. You need to know what color it changes right away, changes that happen within a few minutes, and so on.

Most Leccinum species are edible, but we know there is at least one undescribed species in North America that has caused some unpleasant evenings. Unfortunately, it resembles your specimen, having an orange cap and growing under deciduous trees.

Happy mushrooming!
