overwhelming pinset
    #861432 - 09/03/02 10:36 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

OK here's the deal. I have two casings going right now. One 13"x9" ecuador and one 13"x9" creeper. Now the ecuadors are doing what I would consider to be very good with a nice even pinset and the fruits are maturing very well. Now about the creepers which I have grown before and never seen this happen. If I had a digital camera it would help but here is the problem or maybe it's not a problem. There are literaly hundreds of pins, there is not a square inch that doesn't have lots of pins. It's like the complete casing pinned at the same time and they are all just clumped side by side together on the whole casing. I'm afraid they will not have room to grow. I have never seen a pinset like this before and I'm telling the honest truth. Has anyone had a pinset like this and what happened. I'm also afraid they will all just abort because of how many there are.......hundreds and I mean hundreds, there are way to many to count.

The casing is about a half inch of varmiculite on the bottom then the cakes that were spawned using rye grain on that and then a half inch layer of coco coir on top. Any feedback is appreciated.

What was the substrate and how was it spawned and cased? What strain?

Thanks

It was rye. Cased with 50/50+ casing. The strain was a weed cubensis destroying an indoor azurescens project. Probably the PF classic.

Yep, that would be what it looks like. I'm afraid mine will be aborts. I guess I will find out in a few days. Why do you suppose there are so many pins? Could it be that the conditions their pinning in were too good. Everyone likes to have a good pinset but this is rediculous.

I had the exact same thing happen on a second flush of Cambo's after casing with coco coir, only got 100% aborts. :frown:

Did you determine the cause of the large number of aborts?

Mainly the strain, also grain as substrate tends to create more pins than dung.

yeah my friend had one too only his was PR. He thinks it was due to either too much humidity or not enough air exchange or both. 100% abhorts.

I did both of my casings at the same time and have them in the same fruiting chamber. But for some reason the ecuadors turned out just fine and the creepers pinned like crazy. They were both spawned using the same grain too. I need to figure out a way to prevent this next time.

I've noticed the same thing.....Straight rye casings produce an abundance of pinning, and the majority abort with only 4 or so mushrooms maturing from each flush.
