Im attempting my first grow, monotub spawned from WBS to undecided substrate. Anyway, I bought an ionic air purifier. A Hamilton Beach True Air to be exact. Supposedly 99% effective down to .5 microns. I realize this is probably not as good as a true HEPA but I love the ease and convienience of not having to buy new filters all the time. Will this be effective enough to reduce the risk of contams as long as my sterility procedures are good the rest of the way (oust, lysol, face mask, glove box, etc.) or do I NEED a HEPA?

You don't need a hepa filter...If you are using a glovebox you'll be fine. I have NEVER used a glove box. I always inoculate in a bathroom, spray down 5 minutes before I move in, and move in to inoculate. My biggest downfall has been not using a pressure cooker.
You'll be fine.

My biggest worry is the spawning stage. I am fairly certain my inoculation stage will go well but the spawning stage scares the shit out of me. So much work done in open air.

Yea I have never used a flow hood for that matter either, but I see what you are saying.
Be sure your spawning/FC are clean, and you'll be fine. I bet you'll get the same responses from others. Be sure to do everything in a small room with that purifier you have. For example move it into a closet, or bathroom 1 days before you move into to do all of your work. Lysol is your friend spray that shit on EVERYTHING before you do your work, that along with the purifier will be fine. I have had contaminates in jars, but never had one on my casing...I take that back had some cobweb mold, but its been awhile. All of the contaminates I have can probably be traced back to my fault.

I'm sure my WBS inoculation will go well. There are some great teks on this site, doc's and 6T which I am going to be kinda mixing and following closely. I do have a pressure cooker so I can properly sterilize everything. I posted something on here about making a decontamination chamber with a tent or sum poles and large tarp. The response was I may be taking it too far but I might do it anyway. It doesnt hurt to be extra careful is my view. I was thinking of doing a substrate of 50/50 verm/hpoo or worm castings mixed with straw. Is the straw necessary or can I eliminate that? From what I know, straw is VERY suseptible to contams and I want to eliminate any risks of that.

Yea...Horse poo will work fine. Works great actually. I mean I have seen cakes made with it(with straw), I have seen casings with only horse poo, and the results are pretty fucking incredible. The straw is really to add nutrients, but you don't want that for your casing mix. Don't sterilize your casing mix...Pasteurize it. I'm sure you'll see more about it when you get to reading, but you could start a grow log in this post or another so that if you have some trouble you can ask questions. If you have a grow log going people will watch, and you'll have several people to ask for help.
Is the poo composted?? You don't want the real fresh stuff you pick up right after it comes out if you know what I'm saying.

Too true! It gets under your fingernails. The "heavy" comes right off, but it stains real bad, (not to mention the horses rider keeps looking back at you funny...)!

Haha, I just had an image of that happening. Some stoner jumps out of the woods with a huge ass bag, and scoops up the shit...Next thing they know they're gone again.
Your with the environmental protection people if they ask.
