If you're having decent growth with the cardboard- stick with it. Spores are a good storage method though. If all else fails, then go with spores.

why not try both? I mean, there's no rule banning both experiments at the same time. This way, if either one fails, you'll still have the other going. As far as sterile goes, you won't have that with either method. Your best bet is cloning on agar inside of a glove box or flow hood. But, short of that, try germinating spores on agar, then use the agar isolate to inoculate grain (sterilized prior to the agar addition).

Growth of the mycelium will depend on the species and the strain. As long as it's growing and there isn't contamination, don't worry about it. Just let it grow however fast it's going to grow.
Agar can be purchased on ebay, just about any scientific supply store online or otherwise, pretty much any of the shroomery sponsors and about a million other places. Check your local health food store for it.
