Canuck & Euro health care
    #8608982 - 07/08/08 04:47 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

I found some good dirt for bitch slapping the Canoodlians and Europeeings.  I found this shocking site here http://www.biggovhealth.org/ which exposes the horrors of socialist health care.  Here's one horror story here and how America saved the patient.

Site attacks single-payer health care
By CHRIS FRATES | 7/8/08 4:31 AM EST

Shona Robertson-Holmes was a mess. She had crushing headaches, insomnia and adrenaline levels so high that she constantly felt as if she had just stepped in front of a speeding bus. And that’s not to mention her rapidly deteriorating eyesight.

She headed to her family doctor, who recommended that she see two specialists.

But Robertson-Holmes is Canadian, and her state-provided health care gave her a wait time of four months to see a neurologist and six months to see an endocrinologist. Unable to get an expedited appointment, and with her eyesight worsening, Robertson-Holmes called the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and went in for tests and a diagnosis within a week.

The doctors there told her she had a four-to-six-week window to have a marble-sized tumor on her pituitary gland removed before her vision loss would be irreversible.

Returning home with the diagnosis, the Ontario native was still unable to expedite the surgery. Three weeks later, she came back to Mayo for brain surgery. And she took out a second mortgage to pay for the $100,000 ordeal.

Robertson-Holmes’ story was one of the first collected by the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest, a health care think tank that has launched a campaign to illustrate the problems with government-provided care in Europe and Canada.

Robertson-Holmes said that her biggest motivation for telling her story is that “a lot of my friends who are American have a false idea of what our system is like in Canada.”

Those misconceptions, according to Robertson-Holmes, include a belief that the system is free, when in fact Canadians are taxed to support it, and that there is timely access to care when, in her experience, accessing any part of the Canadian health care system resembles waiting for treatment in an American emergency room. And in Canada, she said, there’s no choice but to wait, because it’s illegal to seek private care.

As part of its campaign, the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest has created BigGovHealth.org, a website full of stories from people who have faced health care problems in Europe and Canada. The nonprofit advocates a free-market approach to health care, and its biggest contributors in 2006 were drug maker Pfizer and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, according to tax filings.

Peter Pitts, the center’s president, said that the campaign was meant to counterbalance what he called the mainstream media’s one-sided reporting on the benefits of government-run systems. The media have yet to show him, he said, “one single example of how the system does not work, not one.”

“We found that very dangerous and dishonest, especially at a time when we’re having a national election and health care reform is at the top of the national agenda,” Pitts said.

In addition to interviewing patients, the center also wants to talk with health care policy experts and caregivers in Europe and Canada. Officials hope to hold a conference before the election on the problems with Canadian- and European-style health care.

“We need to create a uniquely American, 21st century model for health care and not adopt another country’s model that’s broken,” Pitts said.

Ron Pollack of Families USA, which for years has used patient stories to illustrate the problems with the more market-based American system, said that while he agrees with Pitts that the country needs to build a new system and not import one from another country, he questions the center’s message.

“It sounds like they’re on an irrelevant mission,” Pollack said. “Maybe 20 years ago this would have been relevant when people were saying, ‘We want national health insurance, and we want it paid for or run by the federal government.’”

Still, Robertson-Holmes believes it’s important for Americans to hear her story and others like it. So important, in fact, that she traveled to Washington to help the center launch its campaign nine days after a second surgery to remove her right adrenal gland — a procedure the Mayo doctors recommended but that she had to wait three years to undergo back home.

In Canada, “you’re fighting just to get basic treatment and care,” she said. “And it’s wrong.”

and that alone makes anything that comes out of their mouthpieces (ie biggovhealth.org) completely worthless...for every horror story in europe and canada..there are at least 100 in amerikkka.. and of course big pharmas' answer to the problem is to take out a second mortgage on your home...yeah right...

I have to agree though. to be fair Canada's health care system is drowning because the Canadian government has slowly been trying to kill it over the past decade to amalgamate into a US style system. This and the stress of those aging baby boomers always pestering the doctors with their chest pains and for oxygen. Wahaa whaaa whaa. Luddite is right we should just make a retirement home that has Auschwitz style showers and deal with the major problem that way. This could be the final solution to our health care woes pension costs health care worker shortage and housing cost woes. Hail Luddite.

Socialist healthcare in America is an epic failure waiting to happen.

to be fair as I said before Canada's health care problems are the result of the government trying to drown the health care system for over a decade and a half until around 2004/5 when it became clear that America's system was even failing American companies.
I would say that her situation is far superior to the person with no coverage and no money who checks into emergency and is sent away because their life is not in critical danger until they die.

But just for kicks let's let all the bad cats out of the bag here:
In Canada if your over 70 you will be denied major surgeries unless you are of exceptional health needless to say if you have numerous chronic ailments and are old you will receive little or no treatment past placebo prescription.
In Canada the government does not want to expand the low level staffing of hospitals because it would give the union more employees and more power to strike (in 2003 this union called a general strike and the government forced union leaders to accept a lousy contract). At the same time this prevents hospitals from moving to more isolated wards to prevent germ and bacteria spread even though it would reduce hospital stays and sickness significantly.
One hospital in a very rural town instructed a coworker of mine to stay in a hotel after a hysterectomy type surgery and only administered one dose of antibiotics after the surgery. No precaution was made to protect her healing stomach from infection.

Though all and all it still beats the crazy shit they can do in the states. I mean a contam risk in Canada is considered an outrage among Canadians. Can you say that about Americans who don't have $ to stay in a hospital? Or do they say "well I didn't have the money"?

the biggest threat to American style universal health care is American medical companies. Whatever solution is arrived at it has to appease them and the employer class who pays for worker benefits. This is the reason why American health care will suck, not other nations health care systems.

Astonishing crap.  American health care companies are what drives the incredible improvement in health care throughout the world.  Just what do you suppose health care would be like without them?

actually currently Indian outsourcing serves that function. But it isn't medical development companies I am talking about here anyway I mean insurance companies and pharmaceuticals mostly.

This kinda crap is stupid.
,
What was the horror, that she was taxed higher?

Stop making this shit into stuff its not.  Its wrong cuz it taxes people for other people's poor lifestyle choices amongst other things.

I could also buy that its wrong if the doctor didn't advise her it could be advantageous, though at a very low chance, to see a private guy quicker.  Other than that, who cares?

Oh no, she had a four month wait time to see a neurologist for a presentation that was not an emergency.

This kinda crap is disingenuous at best.

And its the worst kind of pandering- hyping up the incredibly rare situation.  How exactly did socialist healthcare hurt her?  It took her money and maybe suggested to her that she needed worry.... big fucking deal.
