invitro bags in a tub
    #8598873 - 07/05/08 09:55 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

If you used a big rubbermaid bin to house invitro bags would you drill small vent holes into it or would you be okay with just removing the top once a day to get some fresh air in?

Hm it would need light at some point. I assume your using a clear bin?? I have never done invitro bags so this is me kind of talking out my ass I only do casings/cakes. I would say I would probably drill a bunch of holes about a quarter inch or something to allow the ventilation of the built up CO2, and fan 3-4 times a day. Like I said I've never done it, but I feel comfortable saying that.

doing that would defeat the purpose of invitro bags.. if you want to use a tub, put some damp perlite or pumice in the bottom, and put your bag's contents in trays and case.. invitro is supposed to be in the bag... lol

soo yeah.. just doing some reading on how to make an FC out of something like that

Maybe I should have been more specific.

I'm only using the bin to hold the bags as a stealth tactic. A storage bin in the closet is a little less illegal looking than the old mono's.

just make sure there are plenty of holes for FAE, and fan them out as much as you can..

Actually, I'm just going to drill some tiny holes in the top, that should be enough to allow fresh air in if I'm gone too long and it'll allow the light from the overhead light to seep in. It's a 50 gallon rubbermaid XL so there should be plenty of headroom for air circulation.

thanks for the help.

I can tell you right now, you will not get good results like that.. you need to manually fan the air out.. it wont move itself.. and if you have a lid on it, then you wont get as much light.. all this together sounds like the makings of a horrible pinset..

I'm not sure if you read this thread. I'm using invitro spawn bags, I'm placing the bags inside a 50 gallon tub as a storage medium. The tub is only going to be used like you would use a laundry basket to hold dirty clothes.

I'll be squeezing the air from the bags daily so they can inflate with fresh air on their own, but as I was sitting here looking at my tubs I was wondering about circulation and came up with a solution, thanks for the help.

there wouldnt be any circulation unless you gave it circulation.. and I know what invitro spawn bags are...

and Im trying to help..

little holes in it wont give you enough light to get a good set.. period...

I was simply suggesting that you watch your grow a little more carefully, because you seem a little confused as to what you need to grow mushies, otherwise you wouldnt have asked this

Like I said.. I would remove the top and give it air by hand or some other method more than once per day, and the lid wont let enough light in.. if you dont want to listen to advice, then why ask a question?

just callin it like I see... hope you figure it out..

I'll get plenty of pins with how I'm going to do it. Mushrooms do not need much light to grow.

this isn't my first rodeo.

well in  the beginning, yes i read.  You just said you were using invitro bags.  Now are you using this to spawn or to produce fruits?  In the case you are using it to fruit a rubbermade full of holes looks a lot more conspiciuos than a rubbermade without a lid on the top.

Also unless my ideas of physics are completely off why would squeezing the air out of a bag cause fresh air to refill the bag.  Seems when i squeeze air out of the bag most of it stays out.

This being said i do not know much about invitro bags, but i just don't see where you are going?

They do need a decent amount of light for a good pinset.

Maybe throw some christmas lights in there on a timer?  That would solve the not enough light issue without adding a ton of heat and preserving the clandestine nature of your grow.  Fanning couldnt hurt anything but it sounds like you planned on squeezing them which would require opening and allowing gas exchange anyway.  Good luck and post your results!
