I was thinking about this the other day... I've never heard of anyone growing puffballs. Maybe becuase you can't take sporeprints as such, and due to the fact that the fruitbody decomposes into spores galore, cloning seems unlikely to work. Straw might be a decent substrate. What do I know though...?

definitely! which brings to mind another possible reason why they aren't cultivated, at least on a commercial basis. By the time the product reached the shops they'd probably be a big brown mass of spore gunge. Which is the same reason C. comatus isn't cultivated commercially either...

I haven't heard of anybody cultivating puffballs, but they are saprophytic, so it should be possible. You may have to experiment to successfully fruit them. Good luck!

I tried to clone it once - without success.
But it's possible - this company is selling cultures of the giant puffball - Langermannia gigantea: http://www.gamu.de/html/shop.html (Pilzkulturen f?r Forschung und Entwicklung)

They grow on very moist clay/sandy soil at the edge of lawns, I Imagine creating a sporeprint from a mature specimen would be extremely easy (just open it up place paper on top and slowly drag back and forth.

I also find them growing on around conifers (whitepine) where I live.

Giant puffball cultures sound very interesting !
I ate some giant puffball at a pub in the southwest of England about 8 years ago or so. The traditional method of cooking was to slice em an inch or two thick, dip them in egg, coat them in fresh breadcrumbs and then fry them in garlic butter untill golden brown. Delicious !

Nope, and I have no idea on what to do next. I just have the petri dishes so far.
