How bad did I get scammed?
    #8568186 - 06/26/08 06:38 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

A guy follows me into the grocery store parking lot yesterday and asks about my car. It's a 1994 Toyota Celica with two big dents which occurred during its previous ownership. I bought the car used, with the dents, for well below the Kelly Blue Book value. These were two fairly good sized dents, one of which had broken the taillight lens and was dented enough that a new lens could definitely not be put in as-is.

His shtick was that he works for a local body shop, but has his toolbox and stuff in his car and could pull out the dents right there on the spot. He said he's seen me driving around town before in the dented car, and has been hoping to meet with me to offer his services. He quoted me $200 and told me that I had nothing to lose by letting him go at the car, and that I'd only have to pay him if I thought it was worth it. So I figured what the hell......

He used an awl type thing to poke small holes around the dent lines. Then he used a slide hammer device to pull the dents out. Afterwords he sanded down the surface, Bondo'd over the holes and scratches, filed & sanded down the Bondo, and sprayed silver spraypaint (yes, ghetto) over it. This all took about an hour and a half.

Consider this:
1) I was content driving the car with big dents. It doesn't bother me that I am now driving a car with cheaply-fixed dents. It's a 14 year old car I bought used a few months ago.

2) I lack the tools and the skill to have done the job myself. I also lack the ambition. Also lacking is the money to have it done professionally. To get it done right and proper would cost a lot.

3) I  have a job where I make decent cash tips, so I actually had the money on me, and will be able to make it back in a few more shifts.

He basically did what he told he'd do.... pull out the major dents and smooth it out a bit. But made sure I knew it was not be anywhere near "factory finish". So, knowing that I know it was pretty much a scam, how badly was I fleeced?

not bad at all i would say, 200 is cheap as hell for dent work, even crappy dent work.  If you didn't want them fixed, you could have easily told him you were not interested.

peace

silver paint = FTL.  seriously why go through all that trouble just to throw something on it that makes it look 2x as worse as it did.

also that guy on tv that does them oxyclean commercials was selling a product where it uses glue and pulls them dents out in 5 mintues....without drilling holes into your car and bondoing it up.

you could have also prob have bought some really strong magnets that might have worked but prob not, just and idea.

$200 sounds expensive thow, i really don't think a repair shop would cost much more than that but i may be wrong, call one up and find out.  you already know how long this amature took to do it, so lets say $60-100 an hour for a pro?

You can get those dent remover suction cups that actually work a lot cheaper. The kinda job he did sounds very shoddy and 200 bucks is a lot for that.. sounds like it was worth $50-100 at most. Not so bad though.. dents are gone and you didn't get raped, right? hehe.

Well, I'd say it was a fair deal, assuming that the car is silver, and not black or something...

EDIT: Oh, and you people talking about suction cups and glue... lol.

it would be way more than 200 at a good body shop...WAY more.

My car had some dents on it, and when I went through the insurance to get them fixed, they said it would cost about 3500 dollars to fix it, the car was only worth like 2000 maybe, so they 'totaled' it and gave me the money, I still drive it to this day, and have it insured through the same company.

peace

he said silver spray paint not primer.

im sure it works for certain dents, and crap for others.  if it works for some then i would have to say money well spent.

why wouldn't a strong magnet pull a dent out?  just curious

if someone gets paid more than $100 an hour to pull dents clearly i need to set up a couple hundred shops in town

no body shops use magnets must not work

if someone gets paid more than $100 an hour to pull dents clearly i need to set up a couple hundred shops in town
15-25 an hour for body shop workers
shop charges 40-100 an hour

It sounds like a good deal up until the silverpaint. This could have all been done without any excess paint removal and thus no silver paint me thinks.

primer is actually a dull grey

yep that must mean its impossible, just like glue doesn't remove any dents

you can find a pro to do it, doesn't mean you have to go to a shop.

Sounds like this guy knows what he's talking about, and the repairman used primer and no spray paint at all.

im just going off the details that were provided, just because your sopposed to use primer doesn't mean thats what he actually used.  we are talking about a guy doing repair jobs in a grocery parking lot here lol

I've definitely enjoyed the mix of opinions -- thanks for sharing.

Ultimately I am happy with what I got: dents pulled out of my car.

And if the customer is relatively happy, when all is said and done, it's not really a scam, is it?

I'm just another hippy on maui driving a dinged up old car  :-)  I have nothing to prove to nobody.

edit -- wish I had a photo of it before and after. Fuck.... should have taken pics.

sounds to me like a decent bodywork guy needed some extra cash, you didnt get scammed at all. the only thing he didnt do was take your car to his paint shop, which is entirely unreasonable for $200 in a parking lot.

you could always go get a shitty Macco paint job for another $200 if you care about the silver paint which might even be primer.

I'm just surprised that it took so many posts before someone realized that your "silver paint" was really primer.  Noobs
