the upcoming election in Zimbabwe
    #8544560 - 06/20/08 01:52 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Quote:

Zimbabwe's opposition MDC will announce on Monday whether the party will withdraw from the 27 June presidential run-off, a party source told the BBC.

MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai is said to be under pressure to pull out in view of escalating poll-related violence.

The withdrawal threat may be aimed at pressuring other countries to demand a fair vote, a BBC correspondent says.

Angola's leader, one of President Robert Mugabe's closest allies, has urged him to stop the violence.

President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos advised Mr Mugabe to "observe the spirit of tolerance, respect for difference and cease all forms of intimidation and political violence".

Quote:

Twenty three-year-old Zimbabwean Maidei [not her real name] struggled to talk about her ordeal at the hands of Zimbabwe's ruling party youths who were keeping her captive.

Nearby the Zanu-PF base in rural Mashonaland West province, she told me about how she had been raped and abused for two weeks.

"I was taken hostage by Zanu-PF youths who are being led by a major and war veteran," she said.

"One of them said I had to renounce my allegiance to opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

"I had to give in to his demands as he said I could be beaten.

"It was against my will and he did not use any protection."

Our interview was made possible at the shopping centre near the base by a well-known businessman with connections to the ruling party in the area.

He had been providing the militia with beer and had met Maidei when she had been sent to the shops to collect it.

When we arrived with three crates of beer, Maidei was again despatched to fetch it.

As she quietly told us her story, she nervously kept an eye out for her abusers.

She said she was not able to make a bid to escape as the men knew where her family lived - about three kilometres from the base.

Mugabe condemns opposition 'lies'

"They say this so that they can later say the elections were not free and fair. Which is a damn lie!" he said.

Mr Mugabe's police chief, Augustine Chihuri, has claimed that the MDC is the main culprit in the current political violence.

"All necessary force will be applied on malcontents and perpetrators of violence," he said.

"This violence is aimed at intimidating people from voting."

New footage emerged on Friday, shot by US embassy staff, showing ruling party militias armed with sticks apparently hunting for MDC supporters in a township in the capital, Harare.

The BBC is banned from reporting inside Zimbabwe but our correspondent Ian Pannell has just returned from an undercover trip to the country, ahead of next week's presidential run-off election.

During his time in the country, Ian obtained documents suggesting that Zimbabwe's military is actively involved in running President Mugabe's re-election campaign. He also saw how opponents of the ruling Zanu-PF party were facing intimidation and violence.

President Mugabe has threatened to arrest opposition leaders for allegedly inciting political violence.

The leader of the MDC had announced he was going to lead a rally sometime this week.  I was expecting we might hear about him getting assassinated.. But he dropped out of the race all together instead - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7467990.stm

It's not like his election really would have promised hope and change for Zimbabwe but it at least would have been a start.

Imagine if King George ordered it.  All of a sudden there would be a whole host from the local nitwit brigade clamoring about how Mugabe was a man of the people and a great champion of the anti-colonialist movement, peace out.

Frankly if the King of the Nitwit Brigade did in fact order the assassination, it would be probably the only thing I could give him even the slightest shred of respect for. Well that and suicide.
