Medicinal pot 'not harmful' [CAN]

Medicinal pot 'not harmful'
June 17, 2008 - canada.com

University researchers have determined that marijuana can make you dizzy or a bit drowsy.

"What we find is that there are side-effects, but they are not serious," Jean-Paul Collet of the University of B.C. said yesterday.

Collet, along with researchers from McGill University Health Centre and McGill University in Montreal, summarized the adverse effects recorded in 31 studies of ingested, medical cannabis use. Smoking pot was excluded.

Of the 4,779 adverse effects recorded, 164 were reported as serious, with the most being a relapse of multiple sclerosis, followed by vomiting and urinary-tract infections. More than 95 per cent of the side-effects were everyday ailments such as dizziness and drowsiness.

"People only turn to cannabinoids after they have tried something else," said Collet. "At this point you can't take it as a first choice. The medical use of cannabis is often for compassionate means and our primary motivation was to get precise information regarding its safety."

Among cannabis-based medications in Canada are Dronabinol, marketed as Marinol, used for chemotherapy-induced nausea and HIV-associated anorexia, Nabilone, marketed as Cesamet, used for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and Oromucosal, marketed as Sativex, conditionally approved for pain. Marijuana is also available through the government's Medical Marijuana program.

How the hell are there that many negative effects?
And a relapse of multiple sclerosis and urinary tract infections; are we thinking of the same substance here?

neat article.

Now check out this one.  By the headline I think these asses have never read a clinical study, or they have an ax to grind:

Adverse effects linked to medicinal marijuana

Pamela Fayerman, Vancouver Sun
Published: Tuesday, June 17, 2008

The use of medical marijuana to relieve pain and other disease symptoms can cause a huge range of adverse effects, says an analysis of safety studies co-authored by University of B.C. and McGill University researchers.

The researchers evaluated 31 studies done around the world during the past 40 years and found that while nearly 97 per cent of adverse events were not serious or life threatening, medicinal marijuana users still have an 86-per-cent increase in the rate of non-serious adverse effects like drowsiness and dizziness compared to non-users, according to the study in the June 17 Canadian Medical Association Journal.

The risk of suffering serious, adverse effects requiring hospitalization is not elevated in medicinal marijuana users, compared to non-users, according to the study. But studies on patients taking marijuana have nevertheless shown that serious effects have rarely been documented, including multiple sclerosis relapses, convulsions, respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders, urinary infections, cancer tumour progression and psychiatric disorders....

hmmm

The increase in multiple sclerosis relapse seemed pretty signifigant. 21% vs 11 for control

One thing the media hasn't really harped on is the fact that this study contends that marijuana is safe and effective for Aids syndromes, and effective in many others- mostly chronic pain conditions.

Additionally, the study says 10-20 % of m.s. patients use marijuana.

Pretty interesting given the political rhetoric.

I think its pretty silly and totally political.  I agree that standardized dosages are better, as in sprays and such, but so what?  What's the harm?

And I'm sick of folks bitching about smoking... I guess its unheard of in washington and our state capitals that you don't need to smoke marijuana

This article is stupid.  It said adverse effects when what they should have said were adverse events.  Every reported adverse effect/person is one adverse event.  The article, as usual for coverage of scientific studies, got it wrong and used wrong terminology- despite the fact they could have simply copy-pasted.

And marijuana is a complex substance.  I take it you've never looked at other research papers on drug trials.  There's all sorts of weird things reported.  They specifically look for any and everything, and the ui and ms results seem pretty strong, presuming the underlying studies were worthwhile.

Read carefully, "Of the 4,779 adverse effects recorded".  That doesn't mean there are nearly 5000 different side effects... it means that in the 31 studies reviewed, there were nearly 5000 reports of side effects.  Perhaps 4500 of those reports were by people that got the munchies.  (Some people could have reported multiple side effects as well.  Munches, dizzy, and tired for example.)
