possible contamination?
    #851599 - 08/29/02 04:12 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

some background information:

-I am using BRF/vermiculite and PF Tek
-I innoculated 8 days ago so it looks like im pretty far ahead of schedule
-I wasn?t thinking and only after innoculating 3 PF jars did I realize that I didnt sterilize my needle
-A few of my jars look somewhat different from each other. As you can see in the jars below, both grew the same way, but in one, what I think is the mycelium, is alot thinner than in the other. In one jar it is hard to see the brf and in the other you can see it through. Are both of these ok? Or are they both bad? Thanks for your help.

The thicker one:

The thin one:

They seem ok, I think there may be too much moisture in the bottom jar though, if you are sure the moisture was the same in both at the beginning then it could be a bacterial contamination.

Thats possible, because I used different amounts of water in different jars to see which would work better.

Thank you

Way a head of scedule!
Looks ok, 2nd one looks like the brf (home made??) pressed against the glass. Keep your eye on them.

Good luck

i think i have the same problem. i made my brf at home. I also reused my jars from a previous experiment. And lastly, some of the jars innoculated look overly wet, one i had to toss because the bottom looked nasty. here are a couple pics.

Notice the ring, middle jar, going from one patch to another.

Another.. my mycelium looks like your "thin mycelium" pic...

the ring in the middle jar has a orangish tint to it, also.. i believe that may be from the seal.. i?m not sure though.
anyway, i don?t know what to think but let them grow, and case each cake by itself. good luck
